Royals coach Wendy Goodbrandson told the Selkirk Journal that “I wish we could have given them a better game because I don’t think they’re 21 points better than us.” The Royals (coached by Wendy Goodbrandson) also included Bev Prins, Shauna Streich, Eileen Preun, Shelley Wood, Gill Martin. …………………………………………………… The Winnipeg Dakota Lancers stuffed the Winnipeg Nelson McIntyre Normacs 74-36 …………………………………………………… The Winnipeg Mennonite Brethren Hawks bounced the Winnipeg Westwood Warriors 61-38. The Warriors included Stephanie Oland, Adrienne Toogood.

In the quarterfinals, the Winnipeg Mennonite Brethren Hawks stunned the 2nd-seeded Winnipeg Dakota Lancers 54-42. The lancers (coached by Jim Gosman and Jeff Gosman) included Carla Bremner, Shannon St. Laurent, Kyla Bremner, Sherry Parkhurst, Kim Patchett.

The Winnipeg Shaftesbury (Tuxedo) Titans nipped the Daniel McIntyre Maroons 48-47. The Maroons included Rana Hackbart.

The Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings edged the Winnipeg Glenlawn Lions 41-40. The Vikings blew a six-point fourth-quarter cushion as the Lions grabbed a 40-39 lead with 11 seconds remaining. But Pam Flick drew a foul with two seconds to play and calmly nailed both. “You have to give Flick a lot of credit,” Vikings coach Stew Farnell told the Brandon Sun. “For someone in Grade 9 to stick two like that, in a big game like that … She earned her varsity status today.” Flick hit 9-10 from the line, while scoring 11. Roxanne Gosselin and Lisa Mazur each added 8. Dianne Zunic led the Lions with 11. The Vikings led 28-22 at the half. The Lions also included Marilyn McNeil, Megan Palmer.

In the last quarterfinal, the Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans whipped the Winnipeg Kildonan East Reivers 71-53 as Susan Somerfeld scored 17. Cecile Brown led the Reivers with 15. The Reivers also included Kim Callendar, Candy Greengrass, Donna Herman, Karen Dumas.

In the semis, the Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings clipped the Winnipeg Mennonite Brethren Hawks 47-31. “We didn’t really think we had a chance halfway through the season,” because so many players from the 1986 title graduated, Paula Gabor, who scored 10, told the Brandon Sun. The Vikings led 13-11 after one quarter and allowed only a single bucket, a desperation heave at the buzzer, in the second frame as they extended their lead to 26-13. They led 34-19 after three quarters. “Our defence was outstanding,” said Vikings’ coach Stew Farnell. “They’re basically a two-man team, and we stopped them cold.” Grade 9 guard Pam Flick paced the Vikings with 14 off the bench. Lisa Mazur added 13, along with 8 boards. Christina Friesen paced the Hawks with 15. Heidi Toews added 6. “To a degree, we were emotionally drained,” said Hawks coach Ernie Koop. “Beating Dakota was like winning the provincials for us.”

In the other semi, the Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans crushed the Winnipeg Shaftesbury Titans 73-44 as Arlyn Adam scored 22 and nabbed 17 boards. Susan Sommerfeld scored 21 and Kelly Wynn 18. Kori Dragan paced the Titans with 22 points and 9 boards. Tracy Turner added 9. “Everyone played to her potential, and we tried very hard,” Dragan told the Winnipeg Free Press. “They just scored more points than us, but we played to the best of our ability, so we can’t say this has been a bad year.” The Trojans shot 41% from the floor and the Titans 19%. The Trojans controlled the boards 43-39. “They played a real tough first half and Dragan did a great job sinking the shots when they needed them,” said Adam. “We started reversing the ball a little more (in the second half) and that opened up the middle.” Titans coach Nick Dyck was pleased his troops had made the schools’ first semi. “They finally broke the Shaftesbury hex. It seemed as though whenever Shaftesbury teams came on the floor they were expected to lose. But this team wasn’t made in that mold. They wanted to win, they knew they could win and they had the skills to do it. We were right in the game. At the half we were down by only eight. If we had one more shooter it might have been the difference. It would have been closer at any rate.”

In the final, the Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans defeated the Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings 49-35. “I thought they were going to come out and hold the ball,” Trojans coach Dave McNabb told the Brandon Sun. “We had some defenses ready. All we had to do was win the jump and score first. I was worried about a close game.” The stall never materialized. The Trojans led 16-14 early when star Arlyn Adam was assessed her third foul. Her teammates picked up the slack as the Trojans built a 26-17 lead at the half. “They just continued to play their game,” said Vikings coach Stew Farnell. “I thought if we could get by the first quarter, we’d be all right. … It was the third quarter that killed us.” But Viking guard Lynn Cornish injured her knee and Pam Flick picked up her fourth foul. Arlyn Adam paced the Trojans with 21. Lisa Mazur scored 13 for the Vikings. Paula Gabor added 4. “They’re a better team, let’s face it,” said Farnell. “But I’m really happy for Lisa and Paula. They went out in fine style.” Trojans Susan Sommerfeld noted that “we are more of a second-half team. We really came out and wanted to get up on them in the second half. We were really pumped up for this one. Andrea Thompson also came in (for Adam in the second quarter) and did a really good job. Then he (coach Dave McNabb) switched the positions around a little bit.” Thompson said she felt no pressure. “I just knew I had to go out and do the job, and everything fell into place. We all know our jobs. We know what to do on offence and defence.”
