We just kept the ball moving and looked for the layups.” The Vikings led 19-11 at the half. Cindy Gabor led the Vikings with 11. Jacquie Loughton added 9, nabbed 12 boards and contained Kelvin post Leita Leipins to 9. The Vikings shot 11-39 from the floor. The Clippers also included Tracey Farrington, Darcy Nieman.

Jacquie Andruski added 5 and Cindy Gabor 5. Vikings coach Stew Farnell told the Brandon Sun that “back in January, I would never have thought they would get this far. I’m not disappointed, I’m really proud of them.” The Vikings were whistled for 22 fouls and the Lancers 8. Dakota hit 16-21 from the line, while the Vikings were 2-5. Among those in foul trouble was Vikings post Jacqui Loughton, which allowed the Lancers to dominate the boards 32-22. “We said at the beginning that we had to stop their big girl (Loughton),” said Lancers coach Dennis Alvestad. “We played it really tight. We tried to take away the passing lanes.” Farnell said his troops were tight against the zone. But we “got the shots we’ve been practicing on, the ones we should be making.” The Lancers led 19-14 and appeared to have things under control in the second half as guard Lori Reid took command. But Lisa Thomas and Cindy Gabor pilfered the ball five times in the next two minutes and when Gabor hit a trey wit 5:09 on clock, the Vikings had trimmed the margin to 30-28.         In the final, the Winnipeg Dakota Lancers defeated the Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans after the Lancers were motivated by a Winnipeg Free Press article which picked them as the team most likely to lose. “That article helped us a lot. It really took the pressure off us,” Lancers coach Dennis Alvestad told the Winnipeg Free Press. “Our two objectives were to take away their transition game and get tough on the boards and I think we did both things. We really beat them up on the boards.” Dakota out-rebounded Vincent Massey 38-28. Sandra Baker scored 16 and grabbed 11 rebounds. Cheril Witter hit 11 and grabbed 7 rebounds. Lori Reid scored 9 points and nabbed 10 boards, Heather Adam 8 and Deb Wynn 8. Cheryl McCombe, Dru McCormick, Heather Adam and Deb Wynn each notched 8 for the Trojans. Reid, who scored 9 for Winnipeg Dakota, noted that “I think the key was when Sandy made that three-point play in the fourth quarter to put us ahead. She shot from the foul line and was fouled and she made the free throw. That really broke the game up.”
