The Brandon Crocus Plains Plainsmen exploded for 26 points in the final quarter to defeat the Selkirk Lord Selkirk Regional Royals 69-60. The Royals led 32-27 at the half and 51-43 after three quarters. “We used our bench a lot in the game in the hope that we’d have some legs left for the fourth quarter,” Plainsmen coach Bob Hamilton told the Brandon Sun. “And it seemed to pay off. Rather than us, they started to tire.” Hamilton also said his club “pressed better than we have all season. We didn’t let them set up, and our shots started falling. We got momentum going for us.” Karen Shier paced the Plainsmen with 26. Siam Peterson added 12 and Mimi Van 8. Sandy Throndson and Lisa Mandziak each scored 16 to pace the Royals. The Royals also included Sandy Szewczyk, Dayna Lalchun, Jamie Oliver.
The Winnipeg River East Kodiaks defeated the Winnipeg Fort Richmond Centurions 49-42 as Ester Nagtegaal scored 15. Chris Fontana paced the Centurions with 16. The Centurions led 37-34 at the half. The Centurions also included Liz Turnoch.
In the last quarterfinal, the Dakota Lancers thrashed the Winnipeg Tec Voc Hornets 91-68 as Lori Reid scored 43. Kim Magdee led the Hornets with 33. The Hornets also included Louise Lamoureux.
In the semis, the Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans defeated the Brandon Crocus Plains Plainswomen 51-43. The Plainsmen led 27-26 at the half. The Trojans led 38-36 after three quarters. “I don’t think they were cold. It was just the fact that it was tough game,” Trojans coach Dave McNab told the Winnipeg Free Press. “They want to play but that just happens sometimes.” Liana Sanders led Vincent Massey with 15 points. Guard Danette Benjamin played despite suffering from the flu and “handled their guards really well,” said McNabb. Karen Shier led Crocus Plains with 13. Jan Dechka added 11. Plainsmen coach Bob Hamilton told the Brandon Sun that “we really were in the game. They switched to a zone on us in the fourth quarter and caused a lot of turnovers. That cost us. We made less than 50 per cent of our free throws. It would have been nice to win. We definitely had our opportunities, but we had a pretty good season and I’m proud of my players.”
In the other semi, the Winnipeg Dakota Lancers defeated the Winnipeg River East Kodiaks 47-43 after rallying from a fourth-quarter deficit by switching to a man-to-man press. Winnipeg River East as ahead 23-16 at the half. Lancers coach Dennis Alvestad told the Winnipeg Free Press that the Reivers “were doing a good job overloading us on the baseline. In the second half, we had to go at them and it made them go away from their game plan.” Lori Reid led Winnipeg Dakota with 20 points. Cheryl Witter added 8. Shelley Derkson and Esther Nagtegaal each scored 9 for Winnipeg River East.
In the final, the Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans defeated the Winnipeg Dakota Lancers 61-56 after taking a 40-27 lead at the half and a 53-38 lead at the three-quarter mark. But the Trojans turned stone cold in the final quarter and Dakota went on a 15-2 run before Vincent Massey recovered. Tournament MVP Danette Benjamin scored 10, including a big free throw in the final minute of play to ensure the victory. Shannon McCormack added 13. Laurie Reid led Winnipeg Dakota with 20, including eight free throws in the final half.
