Kim Adams paced the Huskies with 40. “She was the whole team,” Plainsmen coach Bob Hamilton told the Brandon Sun. “She is a 6-1 centre and she can shoot from outside and also drive quite well. I put people in front of her and she just used them as stepladders. Nobody else on that team could shoot the ball. They’d try to shoot and they wouldn’t come close to hitting anything. We played pretty fair. We shot 40 percent, which is decent and everybody I played had points. I played nine people and they all scored. The bench really helped us tonight.” The Huskies also included Sandra Marriott. …………………………………………………… The Selkirk Lord Selkirk Regional Royals dispatched the Winnipeg Garden City Gophers 87-76. …………………………………………………… The 3rd-seeded Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings stomped the 14th-seeded Winnipeg Kelvin Clippers 88-42 as Angela Foster scored 20, Laurel Mazur 12, Sharon McDonald 12 and Kathy Fehilly 10. The Plainsmen led 42-25 at the half. “Kelvin really doesn’t have a very good team,” Vikings coach Stew Farnell told the Brandon Sun. “We built up a 22-9 first quarter lead and that was pretty much it. We outscored them 25-7 in the third quarter and that really killed them. We got our running game going and our press was working and that got us pumped up. That allowed me to throw my bench in for about half the game.” The Clippers included Sheila Adamson. …………………………………………………… The Winnipeg Fort Richmond Centurions defeated the Winnipeg John Taylor Pipers 50-42. The Pipers included Cindy Stammen, Paula Wickenden, Annie Kupfer, Maureen Diggle.

In the quarterfinals, the Winnipeg River East Kodiaks thumped the Selkirk Lord Selkirk Regional Royals 75-55 as Tanis Brown scored 23 and Brenda Boraski 18. The Royals included Susan Kaluzniak, Sandi Therondson, Wendy DeGroot.

The Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings dusted the Winnipeg Fort Richmond Centurions 73-53 as Angie Foster scored 20. Sharon McDonald added 18 points and 10 boards, Patricia Ferguson 13 and Kathy Fehilly 10, while Candy Charyk nabbed 9 boards. Marta Becker led the Centurions with 16. Carolyn Hill added 14. Massey coach Stew Farnell told the Winnipeg Free Press that his troops successfully prevented the Centurions from getting the ball inside to Becker and Sandi Brown. “We had to keep them from getting inside. I knew we could shoot from anywhere.” Massey led 35-27 at half time. “We really played well,” Farnell told the Brandon Sun. “I saw a lot of positive signs out there this weekend. Angela Foster is out of her slump, Sharon McDonald not only scored a lot of points, but also rebounded really well and Candy Caryk came back in fine style” from a torn cartilage in her right knee. “You really don’t expect someone to come back from ah operation like that and play two months later and she’s given the team a big lift. She’s shown the team a lot of courage with her gutsy play.” The Centurions also included Kendra Gower, Liz Turnrek, Ione Lindquist, Teri Coleman, Kendra Gowler.

The Winnipeg St. John’s Tigers dumped the Winnipeg Kildonan East Reivers 56-38. The Reivers included Sherry Kiliwnik, Linda Tartaryn, Karen Grant, Lisa Ambovsky, Loreen Cleaver.

In the last quarterfinal, the Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans defeated the Brandon Crocus Plains Plainsmen 58-41 as Carol Ploen scored 16 and Allison Smith 13. Jan Dechka led the Plainsmen with 11. Sara Conlin and Sian Peterson each added 10. The Trojans led 33-16 at half time. “The score could have been closer,” Crocus coach Bob Hamilton told the Brandon Sun. “But we’d go down the floor and miss and they’d come back and score. They had two girls taking turns guarding Sara and she was really having a hard time getting open to take any outside shots. We’d have spurts where we’d really play well, but it didn’t last long enough to keep it closer.” The Plainsmen (coached by Bob Hamilton) also included Debbie McCallum, Melanie Tallant, Margaret Gross, Cindy Carter-Squire, Debbie Clarke, Shirley Gircama, Chris Desaulniers and Lori Gilchrist.

In the semis, the Winnipeg River East Kodiaks defeated the Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings 67-56 as Tanis Brown scored 7 points in the final two minutes of play. The Kodiaks led by five when Brown was fouled on a call which also drew a technical against Vincent Massey coach Stew Farnell. Brown hit three of four free throws and after River East got the ball on the in-bounds added a field goal. She later hit two more free throws. “They shouldn’t have fouled Tanis,” said River East coach Dick Blais. “It was their own fault. She’s our best free throw shooter.” Brandon’s press was tough early as Vincent Massey took a 16-10 lead at the quarter, a 30-23 lead at the half. But River East was ahead 45-38 at the three-quarter mark as the Kodiaks slowed the game down. “We calmly broke the press and then we worked inside to Brenda (Boroski) and Tanis,” said Blais. “Boroski also did a good job neutralizing Angela Foster. We knew we had to stop her or at least neutralize her. We knew Tanis could score high and she did.” Brown led the Kodiaks with 20 (according to the Brandon Sun) or 13 (according to the Winnipeg Free Press). Brenda Boroski added 18. Angela Foster led Brandon Vincent Massey with 20.

In the other semi, the Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans defeated the Winnipeg St. John’s Tigers 48-44. Massey suffered temporary injuries to Carol Ploen (bloody nose), Susan Enns (ankle) and Allison Smith (black eye) in the first half but still prevailed as Ploen scored 18 and Enns 13. Vincent Massey switched its halfcourt off in the fourth quarter and pulled away as they drew St. John’s out of their zone and then drove in for easy layups. Danette Benjamin scored 10 and stole the ball in the fourth quarter with her team ahead by one. She drove for a layup and Vincent Massey never looked back. The return of starters Ploen, Enns and Smith in the second half allowed the Trojans to get back into their offence, said coach Dave McNabb, adding that Benjamin’s steal energized the Trojans.

In the final, Winnipeg River East Kodiaks defeated the Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans 57-55 as Tanis Brown scored 22 and Brenda Boroski 12. Carol Ploen led Vincent Massey with 23. Allison Smith added 14. Brown hit two free throws with 17 seconds to play on a foul called against Ploen with River East stalling for the final shot. “To tell you the truth, I didn’t even think she fouled me,” Brown later told the Winnipeg Free Press.
