In the quarterfinals, the Winnipeg Dakota Lancers stomped the Winnipeg St. John’s Tigers 63-19 after leading 19-1, 25-8 and 38-15 at the quarters. Donna Mallette paced the Lancers with 19. Peggy MacKinnon added 8, Diane Macey 7, Lynda Smith 7 and Colleen McAmmond 7. Anne Marie Litschka paced the Tigers with 8. Barbara Banack added 6. The Tigers also included Joanna Ehrlich.
The Brandon Harrison Hawks clipped the Winnipeg Silver Heights Huskies 31-23 as Valerie Rollins scored 25. The Hawks led 21-18 at the half. Dee Thurston paced the Huskies with 8. The Winnipeg Springfield Sabres dusted the Hamiota Huskies 50-28 after leading 20-6, 30-11 and 42-17 at the quarters. Donna Taylor paced the Sabres with 16. Teresa Sontag added 10, Frances Weikart 6 and Lorraine Staimbeck 6. The Huskies led 5-4 early but the Sabres shifted to a man-to-man trap in the backcourt and Hamiota struggled to protect the ball. Bev Pedlow led the Huskies with 13. Pat Thompson added 8, Wanda Anderson 6 and Janice McGregor 1. The Huskies (coached by Lorna Robertson, and managed by Joanne Riddell) also included Sharon Murray, Janice Stewart, Laureen Morton, Del Hunsaker, Dorothy Hudson, Shelly Wales, Wanda Houck, and Mary Clark (who left the team in midseason for medical reasons).
In the last quarterfinal, the Winnipeg Grant Park Pirates clocked the Portage la Prairie Arthur Meighen Saints 55-22 after leading 10-7, 26-14 and 43-16 at the quarters. Barbara Hall paced the Pirates with 16. Melanie Hall added 12, Anne Marie Fraas 8 and Kim Glenn 7. Pat Duchak paced the Saints with 5. Susie Dueck added 5 and Judy McIvor 4. The Saints (coached by Judy Cochrane) also included Lillian Chaske, Ellen Atkinson, Peggy Bourke, Margaret Day, Marlon Moffat, Alice Moran, Lynn Wilson, Judy Greenslade, Elizabeth Smart and Cathy Davis.
In the semis, the Winnipeg Grant Park Pirates edged the Brandon Harrison Hawks 31-29 after rallying from a six-point deficit with 90 seconds to play. With 20 seconds to play, Melanie Hall was fouled while notching a layup. She missed the free throw but sister Barb Hall notched a putback rebound for the winner, according to the Winnipeg Free Press. The Brandon Sun reported that it was Anne-Marie Frass who notched the putback. Anne-Marie Fraas paced the Sabres with 12. Barbara Hall added 11. Valerie Rollins and Brenda Earl each scored 12 for the Hawks.
In the other semi, the Winnipeg Dakota Lancerettes dumped the Winnipeg Springfield Sabres 43-34 as Maureen Andrew scored 11 and Diane Mallette 9. Donna Taylor led the Sabres with 17.
In the bronze medal match, the Winnipeg Springfield Sabres nipped the Brandon Harrison Hawks 39-38 as Ann-Marie Fraas scored 12 and Barbara Hall 11. Hawks 6-5 post Valerie Rollins missed a pair of free throws with the clock expired that would have won it for Harrison. Rollins led the Hawks with 26. The Hawks (coached by Wayne Gray) also included Doreen Loewen, Shirley Krushel, Donna Cipryk, Bonnie Blackwill, Darcy Packard, Sharon Wesley, Mary Jane Young, Gloria Misanchuk, Brenda Earl, Lecia Chalaturnyk and Regina Fleming.
In the final, the Winnipeg Dakota Lancerettes clipped the Winnipeg Grant Park Pirates 44-34. “I never had any doubts about this team’s playing ability,” Lancerettes coach Jerry Ilychna told the Winnipeg Free Press. “But, like all girls’ basketball coaches, their emotional stability scared me.” The Pirates rallied to within three in the final quarter but Maureen Andrew coolly hit three free throws to quell the rally. Andrew paced the Lancers with 17. Lynda Smith added 7, Diane Macey 6, Colleen McAmmond 6 and Donna Mallette 6. The Lancers led 15-5, 28-18 and 32-26 at the quarters. Annmarie Fraas paced the Pirates with 14. Barbara Hall added 9, Kim Glenn 5 and Melanie Hall 4.
