The top-seeded Brandon T.A. Neelin Spartans clubbed the Winnipeg Grant Park Pirates 103-70. The Spartans scored 35 points in the first five minutes and romped. “The kids are pretty focused right now,” Spartans coach Richie Jacobson told the Brandon Sun. “You know, they are a pretty hungry bunch, so they’re not taking anything for granted. They just want to play as sharp as they can and get ready for next weekend.” Tyler Katkins paced the Spartans with 20. Chad Jacobson added 19 and Mike Combs 19. “We came out strong at the start, we got a lot of steals off our press and we ran the fast-break action,” said Combs. “We ran down the court and got easy scores. I think we’re playing well right now and we’re peaking at the right time, so that’s what we wanted to do.”

The 3rd-seeded Winnipeg Kelvin Clippers dusted the Winnipeg Oak Park Raiders 78-52. The Raiders (coached by Randy Kusano and Darren Klapak) included Eric Cable, Scott Mulvey, Charlie Brake.

In the last quarterfinal, the Winnipeg Glenlawn Lions crushed the Winnipeg Sisler Spartans 72-57. The Spartans included Carl Lewis.

In the semis, the 4th-seeded Winnipeg Daniel McIntyre Maroons defeated the top-seeded Brandon T.A. Neelin Spartans 87-69. Erfan Nasajpour paced the Maroons with 23. “We knew the rankings don’t matter anymore. When you get to this point you’ve got to just go out and play and leave it on the floor,” Maroons coach Carey Lasuik told the Winnipeg Free Press. “We wanted to play our game, push the ball up under control, make sure our offence played disciplined and take care of the defensive boards. This is great for our guys.” Dwhyte Brissett and Anthony Cuenca each scored 19 to lead the Maroons. The Maroons led 61-60 with eight minutes to play and broke open the game on an 11-0 run featuring back-to-back treys from Brissett. “The coaches told me to be big in there, get the rebounds for my team and play tough defence,” said Brissett. The Spartans led 39-37 at the half. Spartans coach Richie Jacobson told the Brandon Sun that “it wasn’t meant to be. It was a puzzler, as far as our performance, but the Maroons came out focused and played great and deserved to win the game. Nothing seemed to look right out there. We were out of sync all night, it seemed.”

In the other semi, the 3rd-seeded Winnipeg Kelvin Clippers nipped the Winnipeg Glenlawn Lions 72-70 as guard Kevin Yeboah hit 5-6 from the line in the final 28 seconds. Yeboah scored 7 straight points to give the Clippers a 32-27 lead at the half. They extended their lead to 12 before the Lions began pressing out from their zone and Isaac Ansah began firing from the perimeter. But Kelvin guard Aldin Smalling scored on a three-point play with 1:33 left in the game to give Kelvin a four-point edge. Glenlawn forward Dinush Dealwis and guard Matt Purdey each sunk three-point buckets in the final 30 seconds. “It feels great to be in the final but we know we haven’t really won anything yet and we’ve got a big challenge ahead of us against Daniel Mac,” Yeboah, who scored 17, told the Winnipeg Free Press. Smalling added 15. Dealwis paced the Lions with 19. Ansah added 13.

In the final, the 4th-seeded Winnipeg Daniel McIntyre Maroons pounded the 3rd-seeded Winnipeg Kelvin Clippers 81-58. The Clippers had beaten the Maroons during a mid-season tournament. But Daniel McIntyre was undefeated in regular season play before dropping yet another decision to Winnipeg Kelvin in the city finals. Maroons point guard Glenne Manlig was elated to duplicate a feat accomplished by his brother in 1992. “I’ve been thinking about this moment all day, all week, all month, all year,” Manlig told the Winnipeg Free Press. “My brother’s team was ranked ninth and they upset an Oak Park team so that was history already, but this team, we made our own history and we never gave up!” The Maroons broke the game open in the third quarter when Erfan Nasajpour scored 9. Dwhyte Brissett and Nasajpour each scored to 24 to pace the Maroons. Aldin Smalling led the Clippers with 24. Mark McGregor added 17.
