We knew they had two shooters in Ryan Dulder and Paul Lodewyks. We just put a man on each of them, while three of us played zone defence.” Renold Marcelline added 14 for the Clippers. “Opanubi’s a horse for us,” Clippers coach Hymie Fox said. “He’s a tremendous defender and they couldn’t stop him inside. Our team practiced and practiced. We decided to cover their two shooters and let Dakota’s other two guys try to do the shooting. We didn’t think they could, and they didn’t.” Lancers coach Dean Favoni said “we didn’t play our best game of the year when we had to.” Clippers came out quickly, 23-11 in the first period and 43-24 at the half. We couldn’t stop their inside game and my Lancers didn’t shoot very well.” Lodewyks scored 15 and Dulder 9.

In the other semi, the 7th-seeded Winnipeg John Taylor Pipers dumped the 3rd-seeded Winnipeg Tec Voc Hornets 80-72 as Jory Smith scored 25. Armand Sobrevilla added 12. “They were able to get their speed game going against us,” Hornets coach Greg Bouchard told the Winnipeg Free Press. “They shot well at the right time too.” Williams noted that “we know if we do things right, we win. While we had a bad first half, we were more intense defensively in the second half. It got our transition game going.”

In the final, the 4th-seeded Winnipeg Kelvin Clippers defeated the 7th-seeded Winnipeg John Taylor Pipers 57-42 as tournament MVP Tosin Opanubi scored 21 and game MVP Renold Marcelline 25. “It feels great to win. We were confident

out there just doing our thing. Just going hard, trusting each other, giving that extra pass — that was the key to our win and our success,” Opanubi, who scored 17 in the first half, told the Winnipeg Free Press. The Clippers led 40-26 after three quarters but the Pipers went on a 12-4 run as Casey Gooch and John Lundgren caught fire. “They (Opanubi and Marcelline) were definitely difficult to solve, blocking a lot of shots. They had 46 of their 57 points, so we did a good job on their other three guys,” coach Pipers coach Chris Chartier. “We have to be positive about it. The big difference was our inability to score. Today we only had 42 points and, in the semifinal, we scored 80.”
