In the semis, the Winnipeg Westwood Warriors defeated the Winnipeg St. John’s Tigers, who were representing the City North Conference, 61-46. The Tigers led 14-12 at the quarter. Westwood was ahead 25-24 at the half despite a dreary first half shooting performance. The Warriors looked confused by the alternating box-and-one and 1-3-1- zone which St. John’s presented, but their pressure defence eventually wore down the Tigers. A 16-5 run in the final quarter iced it. Westwood’s press, led by Brett Vickery and 6-1 g Bruce Rannard, forced 19 turnovers. Mark Johannson led Winnipeg Westwood with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Morgan Smail added 14 and Brett Vickery 10. Mike Thomas led St. John’s with 14 points. Devon Clunis added 11. Johannson told the Winnipeg Free Press that the early shooting woes were inexplicable. “I don’t know what it was. We never seem to get good bounces off these rims here.” But the bench took the pressure off the starters, he added. Westwood coach Dave Guss said “I think St. John’s played really well. They alternated from a box-and-one defence to a 1-3-1 which kept us off balance most of the game. But our constant pressure finally got to them in the fourth quarter.”

In the other semi, the Winnipeg Daniel McIntyre Maroons defeated the Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans of the Cloverleaf Conference 74-69 as point guard Leony Ong pounded the ball inside to Joe Ogoms, who finished with 21 points. Ong added 13 and Mel Bothelo 12. Massey was paced by Mark Zachanowich 17, Don Collignon 15, Rob Butler 12 and Kevin Kelly 10. Maroons coach Lori May told the Winnipeg Free Press that Ong is “such a good playmaker. He gets the ball into Joe (Ogoms) so easy, and he has also got a great outside shot.” May added that the Maroons lacked intensity. “No doubt about it. They were looking ahead to Westwood. We lost to them in the Wesmen Classic, and they want another chance at them.”

In the final, the top-seeded Winnipeg Westwood Warriors nipped the Winnipeg Daniel McIntyre Maroons 55-54 as Wayne Patterson and Bruce Rannard held 6-6 c Joe Ogoms to 11 points before he fouled with three minutes to play. “Joe always turns to his left under the boards, so we simply played him there and broke his rhythm,” Patterson told the Winnipeg Free Press. Daniel McIntyre had a glorious chance to win it with 8 seconds to go but 6-4 Howard Green lost the handle on a left-handed layup. Bruce Rannard grabbed the loose ball, and passed it up court to Will Parker, who ran out the clock. “Our press didn’t give us as much as it has in the past either,” said Winnipeg Westwood coach Dave Guss. “They handled it pretty will. They were very patient in bringing the ball up. They’d didn’t score much off it but it kept our guys moving.” Morgan Smail led Winnipeg Westwood with 21 points. Mark Johannson added 14. Ong and Howard Green each scored 14 for Daniel McIntyre. Mel Bothelo added 10. Daniel McIntyre coach Laurie May said that “I didn’t expect Smail to come up hot. We even pulled Joe over to defend against him and he lofted several over the top of him and hit nothing but net.” Morgan
