In the quarterfinals, the Cloverleaf conference champ Winnipeg Dakota Lancers defeated the provincial B division champion Selkirk Lord Selkirk Regional Royals 51-30 as Jim Grissim scored 13, Rick Sigurdson and Jim Ferguson each scored 10. Brian Kowalchuk paced Selkirk with 17. The Royals (coached by Peter Gerbrandt, manager Jeff Gunter, trainer Mel Wechnenko) also included Ron Hummelt, Don Byers, Ron Myall, Ian Linklater, Murray Skrepich, Dave Schaefer, Trevor Reid, Greg Manahan and Wade Ferguson.
The 3rd-seeded Winnipeg St. John’s Tigers thumped the 6th-seeded Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings 55-32 after leading 24-21 at the half. “We played poorly in the first half,” Tigers coach Bill Wedlake told the Winnipeg Free Press. “But we came on in the second.” Vikings coach Aubrey Ferris, whose troops hit 2-27 in the second half, said “we had absolutely no leadership on the floor. When you’re missing like that, everything falls apart. You can’t keep on playing good defence.” Ed Tawkin paced the Tigers with 16. Paul Herman added 14. Ian Farrer led the Vikings with 10. Rick Durnin added 8. Ferris told the Brandon Sun that “we had absolutely no leadership on the floor.” The Vikings hit 2-27 from the floor in the second half. “When you’re missing like that, everything falls apart. You can’t keep on playing good defence. Farrer played well. He’s about the only one who did.” The Vikings (coached by Aubrey Ferris) also included Rick Pass, Bruce Meyers, Troy Lewis, Stu Brown, Ron Heuchart, Bill Kavanagh, Fevin Hooke, Scott Lamont, Lee Miller, Gord Jones, Bruce Gillespie.
The Winnipeg Gordon Bell Panthers clipped the Winnipeg Windsor Park Royals 56-42 as Darryl Stevenson scored 17, Louis Svenningsen 14 and Kurt Bullar 14. “In the second half we used our fast break well,” Panthers’ coach Rick Suffield told the Winnipeg Free Press. The Royals (coached by Brian Thompson) included Wes Stowell, Guy Bouvier, Jeff Pion, Rod Steeves, Lorne Duncan, Warren Aitchison, Greg Danchuk, Marcel Gagne, Alwyn Dyce.
In the last quarterfinal, the Winnipeg Westwood Warriors dispatched the Winnipeg River East Kodiaks 56-42 as Ron Hutsal scored 16, Darryl Kehler 8 and Steve Dahnke 8. Karl Wiebe led the Kodiaks with 13. Peter Nicholls added 11. “We got good games from Steve and Jeff Dahnke as well as Norm Robson,” Warriors coach Dave Guss told the Winnipeg Free Press. “I think both teams played well.” The Kodiaks (coached by Gord Puttaert) also included Herb Guenther, Jeff Kachur, Dan Duerkssen, Brian Leibfried.
In the semis, the Winnipeg Dakota Lancers thrashed the Winnipeg Gordon Bell Panthers 55-30 as g John Gaziuk scored 14, dished 7 assists and pilfered 7 balls. Andy Erickson added 10, Jim Ferguson 9 and 7 boards, Jim Grissim 8 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 7 steals. “When Baziuk plays well, he makes everyone else look good,” said Winnipeg Dakota coach Dale Bradshaw. The Lancers led 10-7 at quarter, 22-14 at half and 39-16 at three-quarter mark. Darryl Stevenson led the Panthers with 13 points. Louis Svenningson added 10.
In the other semi, the Winnipeg Westwood Warriors defeated St. John’s 64-57 as Ron Hutsal scores 35, including 20 in the first half. Steve Dahnke adds 10. Paul Herman led St. John’s with 20 points. Ed Tawkin added 18. The Tigers (coached by Bill Wedlake) also included Robert Flett, Roman Dobriansky, Stew Carmichael.
In the bronze medal match, the Winnipeg Gordon Bell Panthers defeated the Winnipeg St. John’s Tigers 47-44 as Kurt Bullar scored 20 and Darryl Stevenson 15. Ed Taskin paced the Tigers with 15. Stew Carmichael added 13.
In the final, the Winnipeg Dakota Lancers throttled the Winnipeg Westwood Warriors 56-36 to complete a boys-girls double in a dominant performance. They nabbed 29 boards and garnered 22 steals. The Lancers led 13-4, 27-14 and 39-25 at the quarters. Tournament MVP Andy Erickson scored 21. Gary Baziuk added 11. “I thought it was my best game as a Lancer,” Erickson told the Winnipeg Free Press. “I didn’t have too many turnovers and that is pretty good for me.” Erickson also had 6 rebounds and 8 steals. He said team defence proved the difference. “It was very tough. We’ve worked on it all year and it paid off.” Coach Dale Bradshaw noted that “those were the three best games of defence we’ve ever played.” The Lancers stifled Westwood with a matchup zone. It held Ron Hutsal to 17 points. The Lancers finished (30-6) on the season as they captured their third provincial title in four years. The Lancers started Rich Sigurdson, Gary Baziuk, Jim Grisim, Jim Ferguson and Andy Erickson.
