In the quarterfinals, the Winnipeg Miles Macdonell Buckeyes thrashed the Brandon T.A. Neelin Spartans 57-22 as Cliff Bell scored 26, while dominating the paint. Don Colvin added 12 and Ron Hinkewich 11. Bell “had us psyched,” Spartans coach Bill Moody told the Brandon Sun. Buckeyes coach Jim Harrison said “my boys played well. Bell intimidated Neelin with his height. That was obvious right from the start. I was a bit disappointed with (Neelin’s) play. With a winning record like theirs, I expected a lot more.) Werner Roth led the Spartans with 7. Frank Bauche added 6. The Spartans (coached by Bill Moody and Murray MacMillan) also included Jim Ferguson, Murray Rodgers, Bob Bauche, Gregg Senchuk, Dave Williscroft, Neil Chapman, John Donovan, MacNaughton, Kelleher, Sproule, Milne and Black.
The Winnipeg Gordon Bell Panthers clipped the Winnipeg John Taylor Pipers 61-47 as Jeff Carrigan scored 31 and Dan Hryniak 12. Terry Hogue led the Pipers with 16. Dan Seprovich added 10 and Craig Boan 10. The Pipers (coach Nick Yacheson, coach Wayne Ruff, manager Robert Kane) also included Ron Zarney, Dave Innes, Dave Voechting, Robert Peters, Alan White, Stan Wood, Dana McCartney and Lloyd Dawes.
The Winnipeg St. John’s Tigers dumped the Winnipeg Windsor Park Royals 58-40 as Bohdan Pisak scored 15 and Alex Buchko 15. Brian Rumsey led the Royals with 13. Neil Harrison added 10. The Royals also included David Plant, Claude Landry, Bill Abo, Grant Skinner, Nick Rumski, Molgate Abo, Claude Landry.
In the last quarterfinal, the Winnipeg Dakota Lancers whipped the Winnipeg Glenlawn Lions 69-56 as Doug Freeth scored 18, John Taylor 17 and Bob Montsion 16. Greg Daniels led the Lions with 23. Al Beaver added 12. The Lions (coached by Jim Bulloch) also included Rob McCowan, Rob Anderson, Ralph Pearce.
In the semis, the Winnipeg Miles Macdonell Buckeyes was forced into overtime against the Winnipeg St. John’s Tech Tigers but prevailed 52-40 as Cliff Bell scored 12 of his team’s 13 points in overtime. Bohdan Pisak led St. John’s with 21.
In the other semi, the Winnipeg Dakota Lancers defeated the Winnipeg Gordon Bell Panthers 50-43 as Doug Puttaert and Bob Montison each scored 10 points. The Panthers were paced by Jeff Carrigan’s 18 points.
In the bronze medal match, the Winnipeg St. John’s Tigers dispatched the Winnipeg Gordon Bell Panthers 63-55 as Andy Maslowski scored 20. The Panthers (coached by Graham Simpson) included Jeff Carrigan, Dan Hryniak, Bill Hoole, Walter Olesyk.
In the final, the Winnipeg Miles Macdonell Buckeyes captured their consecutive crown by dumping the Winnipeg Dakota Lancers 43-29. The Buckeyes took a 25-14 lead at the half but the Lancers rallied in the third quarter, outscoring Macdonell 19-7, to take a 33-32 lead at the break. But the fourth quarter belonged to Macdonell as they outscored Winnipeg Dakota 18-13 and captured their second straight crown. Cliff Bell led Macdonell with 23. Don Colvin and Ron Hinkewich each scored 10, Ken Hayes 5 and Frank Klassen 2. Bob Montison led the Lancers with 16. Doug Freeth added 11 and Doug Puttaert 6. After the game, coach Jim Harrison retired to focus his efforts strictly on volleyball. The Buckeyes finished (22-4) on season.
