Qualification was determined as follows: Winnipeg champ Daniel McIntyre; Suburban champ Vincent Massey; Suburban finalist Norwood; Private schools champ Mennonite Brethren Collegiate; Northern Manitoba zone champ Flin Flon Hapnot; Western Manitoba champ Brandon Collegiate; Red River Valley zone champ Morris; Portage-Selkirk zone champ Selkirk Lord Selkirk Regional.
In the quarterfinals, the Winnipeg Daniel McIntyre Maroons whipped the Selkirk Lord Selkirk Regional Royals 92-24 as Jim Gommerman scored 25, Bob Hunter 20 and Garry Grubert 17. Bob Boresky led the Royals with 10. Stefan Sopher added 10. The Royals also included Gerald Bakaluk.
The Winnipeg Mennonite Brethren Hawks dusted the Flin Flon Hapnot Kopper Kings 75-33 as Herb Falk scored 14 and Phil Toews 12. Jack Snyder led the Kopper Kings with 8. Tom Wilson added 7. The Kopper Kings also included Jack Holmes.
The Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans clocked the Morris Red Hawks 90-58 as Gord McLure scored 19, Barry Marko 16 and Tom Dynn 13. The Trojans led 48-16 at the half. Eddie Kehler led the Red Hawks with 16. Eddy Buhr added 14 and Hugh Johnson 13. The Red Hawks also included Cameron Rempel.
The Winnipeg Nelson McIntyre Wolverines (then the Normacs) clipped the Brandon Collegiate Blues 60-44 as Bob Allan scored 15 and Dwight Bolting 11. The Wolverines led 25-24 at the half. Eugene Shaharow led the Blues with 12. The Blues (coached by Dick McDonald, manager Ed Anderson) also included Dale McFarlane, Brian Patterson, Morley English, Bill Carr, Dave Carcary, Bob Wilkins, Ross Brownlee.
In the semis, the Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans clipped the Winnipeg Mennonite Brethren Hawks 61-46 as Tom Dunn scored 17 and Barry Marko 13. The Trojans led 29-23 at the half. Dave Redekopp led the Hawks with 10. Bob Friesen added 8.
In the other semi, the Winnipeg Nelson McIntyre Wolverines clipped Winnipeg Daniel McIntyre Maroons 57-47 in overtime. The Wolverines zone befuddled the Maroons, particularly in the first half. The Maroons forced overtime when Dan McMillan notched a bucket that rolled around the rim and dropped in with 14 seconds to play, while knotting the score at 45. The Wolverines (then the Normacs) led 21-4 at the half. Bob Bilan paced the Wolverines with 19. Dwight Botting added 16 and Bill Olson 12. Larry Chapman led the Maroons with 15. Gary Grubert added 9.
In the final, the Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans clipped the Winnipeg Nelson McIntyre Wolverines (then the Normacs) 59-43 in a rematch of their suburban Winnipeg finals, in which the Trojans had defeated the Normacs in two straight games. The Winnipeg suburban titlists ran off seven straight points to open the contest before Nelson McIntyre got on the board with a free throw by Bob Bilan. Trojan captain Tom Dunn controlled the boards as Vincent Massey roared to a 38-18 halftime lead. The second half belonged to the Normacs early as they closed to within eight twice, but the Trojans were too strong and too good to be caught. The Trojan’s Barry Marko scored 19, including 14 in the first half. Dunn hit for 10 while Wayne Oliver added 10. Massey coach Vic Prude had guided Sisler to a provincial title in 1958. Bob Bilan paced the Wolverines with 19. Terry Angus added 7 and Dwight Botting 6.
