In the final, the top-seeded Warren Wildcats defeated the 2nd-seeded Carman Cougars 58-23. Wildcats coach Ken Overby told the Stonewall Argus that it was a “dream” team. “It was a combination of several things. A lot of experienced players were heading into their fourth year. Six of the players played for Art Koop’s juvenile region team. Christy and Michelyn played on the provincial juveniles last year. It was also partly traditional. We’ve done well in basketball over the years thanks to a supportive administration. Randy Lasuik’s influence on the team made it stronger fundamentally because of his being there. Our fundamentals and defence were stronger and you can’t forget the players, they were hard working, motivated people who have learned how to co-operate and become a very effective team.” Overby said the victory was tribute to Dennis Clym, coach of the Wildcats when they won the provincial title in 1983 after starting the program. Clym died in 1984. “There’s a bit of a basketball tradition at our school that was started by Dennis Clym. We coached together for a number of years and this is very special. We wanted to make the program something that players (in Warren) would want to be a part of. We are getting to the stage where younger sisters (of former players) are coming out but we’re not yet at the stage where daughters are!” Co-coach Randy Lasuik said team chemistry develops out of the small community setting. “You really have to get the kids excited ‘about the game. Being smaller we have to work that much harder to compete against some of the schools we did this year. These players are unselfish, a desire to set goals and a willingness to succeed, very coachable and they’ve got a very hard work ethic.” The Wildcats finished (28-2) on the season.
