In the final, the top-seeded Beausejour Edward Schreyer Barons defeated the 2nd-seeded Portage Trotters 74-69 as tournament MVP Darryl Kostiuk scored 27. Trevor Shwaluk led the Trotters with 23. Barons coach Peter Nicholls told the Dauphin Herald that the task of capturing the crown wasn’t enormous. “Any idiot could coach these guys. You just throw the ball out to them and let them run.” Tournament MVP Darryl Kostiuk said “we’re always trying to run. That’s our game. Nicholls said “we’re not a real big team, but the fundamentals are good, so we have to run and gun. It’s fun coaching that game and it’s got to be more exciting to watch.” The Trotters led 17-14 after one quarter. The Barons led 35-32 at the half and extended their margin to 10 by forcing turnovers with a full-court press. “They controlled the tempo and they did it with their press,” said Portage coach Ron McCutcheon. “They showed a lot more poise at times. We couldn’t shake them and they could get us out of control.” Trotter guard Trevor Shwaluk said “they played good defence on us. We haven’t faced it that much [pressure] this year. We’re a team that likes to press and doesn’t like to be pressed.” Nicholls said ““I think the difference in the game was they just had a tough time staying with Darryl (Kostiuk) and James (Garand).” Kostiuk scored 27 and Garand 24. Shwaluk led the Trotters with 23. Mike Mitchell added 19.
