        In the semis, the Cowichan Thunderettes defeated the Vancouver Prince of Wales Walesmen 53-47 as Bev Chester scored 19 and Sandra Mercer 12. Prince of Wales was ahead 39-22 at the half but Cowichan charged back to take a 49-45 lead with minutes to go. Prince of Wales was paced by Shelley Chambers 13 points.

In the other semi, the lead changed nine times before the Vancouver Killarney Cougars defeated the Salmon Arm Jewels 72-63. Cheryl Kelsey scored 38 points as Killarney racked up its 37th straight win without a loss on the season. Tracy Gelsinger added 22. Salmon Arm, which had both Val Scafe and Lynn Durkee pick up their fourth foul apiece early in the second half, was paced by Monique Bouvier’s 22 points. Durkee added 17. Bouvier, Durkee and Shelley Green fouled out for the Jewels, while Val Scafe played the final quarter with four. Jewels coach Terry Michell blamed poor officiating, telling Canadian Press it “the worst I’ve ever seen in my life.” The Jewels led 45-39 before they started fouling out. Thereafter, Killarney’s full-court press yielded major dividends. Michell told the Salmon Arm Observor that “you can’t expect to win the big game when your big players aren’t out there.”

In the bronze medal match, the Vancouver Prince of Wales Walesmen defeated the Salmon Arm Jewels 65-58 as Susie Neil scored 17 and Karen Stewart 17. The Walesmen led 38-30 at the half. Lynn Durkee paced the Jewels with 22. Val Scafe added 17. Jewels coach Terry Michell told the Salmon Arm Observor that “we were kicked in the head the night before and it was tough to come back.” The Jewels (coached by Michell) also included Monique Bouvier, Shelley Green, Linda Trautman, Beth Somers, Sharon Butchart, Geri Wayslow, Tracy Jones, Wanda Schalm and Cheryl Karras.

        In the final, the Cowichan Thunderettes defeated the Vancouver Killarney Cougars 61-53. The underdog Thunderettes prevailed as 5-10 centre Lori Glomlien scored 25 points and nabbed 24 boards. Cowichan was ahead 30-18 at the half and up 45-39 when Killarney rallied to tie the game at 47 with 2:20 to go. But Cowichan countered with a 6-0 run that put the game away. Cheryl Kelsey finished with 34 points for Killarney, coached by her father Ian. The Killarney squad had lost Shari Claridge, who averaged 25 ppg through the season, just before the tourney as she tore her knee ligaments. Ian Kelsey said the outcome would have different with Claridge. “It wouldn’t have been the same with Shari. The adjustment we had to make when she got hurt was very difficult. But we had a fantastic year, (finishing 37-1) and we’re grateful for it. Cowichan did an outstanding job tonight and they were very aggressive. We knew it would be tough with the big girl inside.” Cheryl Kelsey, who scored 156 points in four contests, noted that by the end of the game, “I was out of steam. I had no more left.” Cowichan Duncan coach John Lockwood said Glomlian had never played a better game. “She seemed to be a human vacuum cleaner at both ends of the floor. She played a helluva game. And we did exactly what we thought we would do tonight. We stopped the other girls and gave Cheryl her 35 points. Also, we were controlling the second shot and that was the key.” Lori Elliot had 11 assists in the game, while Sandy Mercer scored 12 points and Twon Klawer 8, along with 8 boards. The Thunderettes finished (46-1) on the season.
