In the final, the New Westminster Hyacks issued perennial interior powerhouse Salmon Arm their third straight provincial championship defeat, as the all-senior squad captured the crown by a 46-41 score. According to coach Bob Grant, the difference was “desire. I think we had a little bit more of it than they did.” The Hyacks forced Salmon Arm to the perimeter with a man-for-man defence and contained Salmon Arm to .200 from the floor, while shooting .420. The Hyacks led 29-18 at the half before Sandra Tatchell rallied Salmon Arm to a 39-38 lead. But Shelley Creelman began dominating the boards for the Hyacks and the tough defence limited their foes to a single shot from the field. On offence, the Hyacks crisp passing destroying the Salmon Arm zone. Val Law finished with 20 points for the Hyacks, including 16 in the first half. “The girls were really up for this game,” said Grant. “After all, Salmon Arm has won the B.C. title seven times and maybe they weren’t as hungry for this one as we were.” Sandra Tatchell led Salmon Arm with 18.
