But after racing ahead by 16, Maple Ridge almost blew it as Kelowna’s full court press began to rattle the Ramblers in the fourth quarter. Kelowna tied the score at 59 at the buzzer on a Brad Monteleone field goal. But in overtime, two field goals by Glen Cote and one by Todd Osborn gave Maple Ridge the early lead and they held on for the victory. Cote paced the Ramblers with 26. Osborn added 20, John Carlson 15, Neil McComb 4, Darren Rowell 2 and Steve Sheasgreen 1. Ramblers coach Ken Dockendorf told the Maple Ridge News that “we’d run out of gas. I was mad. We should have never let them back in the game. In overtime, the boys went out and played. … I was not going to let (Al Lalonde) beat us. He was the key. We geared everything to him.” Osborn contained Al Lalonde to 14. Mike Clarke added 12, Mike Parkins 10, Chris Culos 10, Brad Monteleone 8, Tim Kroeker 6, Mike Penner 3 and Mark Osachoff 2.

In the bronze medal match, the Mission Roadrunners nipped the Kelowna Owls 80-79 as Mal Gill scored 27, Mark Pederson 15, Hap Grewal 14, Bruce Hamilton 13, Dean Grant 7 and Wade Cameron 4. “It was exciting for sure, being out there on the court, feeling like an NBA player because you are in a mini-Coliseum,” said Mal Gill. “That was our goal from the time we started as a high school team together; just to get the opportunity to get there and play.” Gill recalls the team just getting on a roll at the right time. “Getting into it, we were cocky little teenagers. We figured we would be in the final, but deep down inside, if you had asked me, (I knew) we were in trouble. We were fourth in the Valley and had gotten our butts handed to us by Maple Ridge in one of the games. I remember thinking we have a long way to go.” Mike Clarke paced the Owls with 35. Al Lalonde added 14, Tim Kroeker 14, Chris Culos 6, Mark Osachoff 4, Bryant Ibbetson 2, Brad Monteleone 2 and Mike Parkins 2. The Owls also incluced Troy Duzsik, Ian Black.

In the final, the Maple Ridge H.S. Ramblers, making their first tournament appearance in 16 years defeated the J.D. Jackson-led Vernon Panthers 77-71 to capture the crown. The Ramblers almost failed to qualify for the tourney was they were upset by Port Coquitlam in the Fraser Valley tourney in late February. But they won a subsequent play-in game to qualify for the provincials. Destiny also seemed to play a hand as 6-5 post Glen Cote walked away unscathed from an automobile collision on the night Maple Ridge lost in the Fraser Valley playoffs. A vehicle had run a red light and struck the car in which he was a passenger. Cote paced the Ramblers with 28. Todd Osborn added 23, John Carlson 19, Neil McComb 4 and Steve Sheasgreen 4. Ramblers coach Ken Dockendorf told the Maple Ridge News that “it’s a dream come true.” Dockendorf also lauded the unselfish play of his team. “The final typified where we can from all year” in terms of execution. J.D. Jackson paced the Panthers with 23. Tim Tollestrup added 12, Rod Charlton 10, Greg Kereliuk 8, Ted Vanderwal 8, Bruce Babiuk 6 and Lee Christensen 4. But the 6-4 post Vanderwal got into foul trouble early, picking up four in the first half and was forced out of the game with 8:50 to go with his fifth after only scoring 8 points. Tourney MVP Todd Osborne noted that his award “could be split among everybody on the team. They all deserved it. All I had to do this year was fast-break and get the ball inside to those guys. We felt the Kelowna game was a bigger one that this. We felt that once we got past last night’s game, we could win. In the first half, I felt they controlled the boards. But in the seconds, our size was a real factor.” Panthers coach Dave Jackson said the Ramblers deserved “full value for the win.”
