Mac Gordon paced the Red Devils with 27. Rick Woldum added 14, Kyle Wood 10, Mark Balson 6 and Jack Bryson 3.
In the semis, the North Surrey Spartans nipped the Steveston Packers 61-57 in a game featuring 17 lead changes in the second half. With 1:07 to go on the clock, Jay Derksen hit two free throws after being intentionally fouled by Rob Busse. After Steveston’s Edgar Kruse missed a field goal, Sean Gibson added an insurance field goal for North Surrey. John Randa finished with 21 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for the Spartans. Jay Derksen and Sean Gibson each added 16, Albert Attfield 6 and Doug Bittner 12. The Spartans used a box-and-one to contain Randy Carkner, forcing the Packers to the perimeter. Packer guard Bill Ellis told the Richmond Observor that “it’s a hard defence to play against.” Packers coach Kent Chapell said that defensively, “we did what we wanted to do. You can only do so much in the time you’re your are given.” Steveston, which garnered only 23 rebounds in the contest, were led by Stu Noble’s 17. Edgar Kruse and Richard Meiklejohn each added 10, Randy Carkner 8, Rob Busse 8 and Bill Ellis 4.
In the other semi, the Duncan Cowichan Thunderbirds thrashed the West Vancouver Highlanders 75-50 as 6-10 centre Greg Walters scored 34 points, grabbed 24 rebounds, shot .560 from the floor, .800 from the line and blocked 10 shots. West Vancouver was ahead 16-7 after seven minutes, but Cowichan rallied to within three 18-15 at the quarter. By the half, Cowichan was ahead 33-26 and in control. Although West Vancouver closed to within 43-41 with three minutes to go in the third quarter, they went stone cold in the fourth quarter with Cowichan coach Tim Cox switched his team to a zone. Graham Egan added 19 for Cowichan, Mike Goulden 12, Falko Heuser 5 and Scott Stinson 3. John Oberhoffner led the Highlanders with 11. In the final, the North Surrey Spartans defeated the Duncan Cowichan Thunderbirds 69-63, despite trailing early 24-8. But the second quarter belonged to North Surrey as they exploded with a 16-0 run to take a 39-36 halftime lead. Cowichan outscored North Surrey 20-10 in the third quarter to seize the lead again, 56-49 at the three-quarter mark. Greg Walters added a bucket for Cowichan to open the fourth but then the North Surrey zone press began to take effect. North Surrey went on a 10-0 run before Walters finally hit another bucket for Cowichan to put them ahead 60-59. John Randa responded with two field goals and North Surrey took a 63-60 lead with 3:12 to go. Graham Egan drove the late 17 seconds later to pare the margin to 63-62. But Jay Derksen then hit two field goals for North Surrey, the last with 1:26 to go. Spartans coach Marinus Horsting told Canadian Press with regard to the 20-7 run in the final 10 minutes that “we made some adjustments when they got way ahead. We fronted Walters with our guards and when we started pressing, that got us going.” Cowichan coach Ted Cox said “you might say we ran out of gas Their halfcourt press threw us off a bit. It looked like a 1-3-1 or a 1-2-2 and we hadn’t seen one like that for a while. But I think the key was they moved the ball very well against our zone and we didn’t move it as well against theirs.” Cox told Canadian Press “what can I say. They shot and we stopped. Also, their half-court press threw us off.” Randa, who finished with 35 points and 22 rebounds, attributed the victory to the zone press. Derksen added 14 for North Surrey, Doug Bittner 8, Sean Gibson 8 and Joemar Casanova 4. Cowichan was paced by Greg Walters 26 points and 10 rebounds.
