In the final, the Nanaimo Islanders defeated the Victoria Oak Bay Bays 71-62 to cap a (43-1) season in which their only loss was to a visiting high school team from Australia at the Western Canada high school tournament. The Bays took a 12-10 lead after the quarter in the seesaw battle. They led 31-30 at the half but the Islanders scored the final two hoops of the frame to lead 54-51 after three quarters. Three quick transition buckets midway through the final frame proved the difference. Islanders coach John Levering told the Nanaimo Daily News that “throughout the tournament, the guys were not 100% there at all times. But when they had to, they showed a lot of poise and came through when needed. … The major thing in us winning is, we played well enough to win but we were not playing great throughout. The pressure didn’t bother us and the 12 ballplayers we have, have worked harder than any other club in B.C.. We were able to outplay teams and come through with wins. … (But) they lulled us into their type of ball game. They took away our momentum.” Victoria Oak Bay was paced by Kelly Dukeshire’s 34 points and 17 boards. Ken Kirzinger added 17, along with 22 boards, sixth man Lanny Sawchuck 8, and Wayne Andrews 4. Nanaimo coach John Levering noted later that “I can sit here and smile because I think I’ve sold these kids on defence. Picking off a pass, rejecting a shot, or creating a steal can be just as much fun as scoring points.” Oak Bay coach Don Horwood noted that “Nanaimo gambles more on defence than any team I’ve seen. They create havoc. But they can afford to do it because they’re so quick.” The number one ranked Bathtub City boys used their second-half fastbreak to surprise the perennial Victoria powerhouse. A fourth brother Rick, was then playing for the Simon Fraser University Clansmen. The team’s motto was “Raz-A-Ma-Kaz’, reflecting its razzle-dazzle up-tempo style and the prevalence of the Kazanowski brothers. Bays coach Don Horwood told the Victoria Times Colonist that “they’re true champions. They faced the pressure of being No. l all season and showed the kind of poise we usually have in the final.” Horwood told the Nanaimo Daily News that the Islanders “really deserved to win. They did it all season and when there was pressure on them in this game, they won it again. They were the deserving team to win.”
