In the final, grade 11 centre Ken Kirzinger scored 30 and point guard Craig Higgins 28 as the Victoria Oak Bay Bays rallied from behind to defeat the Surrey Princess Margaret Lions 75-64. The Lions had raced ahead on torrid outside shooting early on, bombing 25 footers to take a 23-12 lead into the second quarter. The Lions press appeared to flummox Oak Bay early, so coach Don Horwood withdrew guard Tom Sinnot from the game and dropped Higgins back to the point. He easily broke the press driving for layups, hitting outside jumpers and feeding the ball inside to Kirzinger. Oak Bay took a 32-31 lead at the half and exploded with a 23-14 third quarter as the Lions “shooting went ice cold,” said Princess Margaret coach Joe Durdul. Wayne Andrews added 13 for Oak Bay, Blair Boland 2 and Kelly Dukeshire 2, while Tih Tan, Tom Sinnott, Rick Hatchman and Jay Loukes were scoreless. The Lions were paced by Kenny (Kerry?) Taylor 24, Kevin Halicki 13, Dan Martin 8, Rick Stelting 7, Harj Sihota 6, Paul Cuffley 4, Rob Comeaux 3 and Brad Nilsson 2, while Dave Botcher, Rory Johnston, George Rossi, Jim Morris and Cliff Robb were scoreless. Ken Kirzinger scored 92 points in four tourney games for the Bays and added a third provincial crown to the Kirzinger family’s collection. Brother Dave had played on Oak Bay’s 1973 and 1974 title teams. But early on the year, it did not appear as if Oak Bay would be in the title hunt. The team lost 7 of 9 games in national high school tourneys during the mid-season and appeared mired in mid-season inertia and lacking discipline. Players missed practices, suffered injuries and series of colds. “Two months ago, I would have said our chances were shaky. But in the stretch drive, we concentrated on taking the inconsistency out of our defence and no one missed a practice for the last month and a half,” said coach Don Horwood. It was Oak Bay’s fifth provincial title in 13 years. Among the most dominant schools in provincial high school history, the Bays reached the title game in 9 of the previous 13 years. Lions coach Joe Durdul told the Surrey Leader that “we had to shoot it from outside and just couldn’t do it. They were scoring from inside and that’s how we were outdistanced.”
