In the final, the Coquitlam Centennial Centaurs pounded the North Delta Huskies 60-40 before 9,200 at the Pacific Coliseum. The final was a rematch of the Fraser Valley championships, which North Delta had won over Centennial 53-52. In that contest, North Delta coach Stan Stewardson had used a 1-3-1 zone to contain Lars Hansen to 11 points but in the provincial final, the Huskies used a man-for-man defence, sagging off inside on Hansen. “I thought we could win the other way,” Huskies coach Stan Stewardson told the Vancouver Sun. Changing midway wasn’t the answer. “It was too late at the beginning of the game. It was 38-30 for them then and if I had pulled out the zone, they would have stalled.” But it was Lars Hansen’s night, as the 6-10 centre scored 39 points, one less than entire North Delta team. Hansen scored 20 of the Centaurs 24 first-half points. North Delta never led and John Buis, Mike McNeill and Rick Tough all fouled out trying to contain Hansen. Centennial also received 9 points from Greg Hoskins, 8 from Terry Uotuk and 4 from Brian Fulton, while Rob Davidson, Mitch Dudoward, Art Abraham, Gary Holte, George Mousseau, Dave Bedwell, Al Godwin and Arnold Anderson were scoreless. North Delta was led by guard Dan Chapman’s 13 points, most of them achieved driving the lane. Stu Graham added 9, Mike McNeill 9, John Buis 7 and Don Clipperton 2, while Terry Beitel, Pat Rohla, Bruce Lowe, Rick LeBlanc, Glen Hilder, Allen Staples and Rick Tough were scoreless. Hansen told the Sun that “I’ve dreamed about this night for years and years. I’m going to take a rest now and worry about my education. That’s all.” Years later, Hanson, who attended the University of Washington, told the Vancouver Province that “I can remember in the warm-up looking at coach (Gordon) Betcher and telling him, ‘Don’t worry, coach, you’re not going to lose the game.” Huskies coach Stan Stewardson said “at the playing of the national anthem, I started staring at Lars. I found his eyes. And when Lars never looked down, I knew he was going to have a good game. I think if I did that the year before, he would have looked down. It was a blatant attempt on my part to intimidate.” Prior to the final, Hansen slam dunked a basketball in the pre-game warm-up and was assessed a technical foul.
