Abbotsford guard Harry Jesse hit two free throws late in the game to give his team a 49-48 lead. As North Delta in-bounded the ball, Abbotsford went into a press with 20 seconds to go to try and disrupt the Huskie offence. But Coutu easily handled the press, raced down the sideline and whipped the ball inside to Don Clipperton, who hit an easy layup. Clipperton was fouled on the play but he missed his free throw. But Stu Gowitt rebounded the ball, and handed it off to Coutu who was called for three seconds in the key. A desperate Abbotsford heave missed and North Delta escaped with the win. In the final, the North Delta Huskies defeated the Vancouver College Fighting Irish 43-38. North Delta won its 40th game of the season and won the crown in a season which had begun somewhat inauspiciously as in the opening practice of the season, star Dave Coutu hurt his knee and was told he’d be unable to play for two and a half months. “Dave without a doubt put us in sixth place last year,” said Stewardson. “And everyone underestimated guys like Stu Graham, Mike McNeill well, all of them.” Stewardson said Coutu’s early injury forced the rest of the team to develop rather than rely on their star. “All of four of those teams (which North Delta faced in the tourney) had a special defence for Dave. They never had just one man on him.” Coutu was held to just one field goal and two free throws in the opening 16 minutes of play but the Huskies were still ahead 28-24 at the half. In the second, Coutu moved his game outside and Clipperton, who’d battled his way into the starting line-up in the win against Abbotsford, swung into the key and hit four field goals. Coutu added two long jumpers and it was game over. The Fighting Irish tried to press for the remainder of the contest but came no closer than four. Coutu later said “we were prepped from Grade 8 that we were going to the B.C.’s and were going to win it.” Coutu finished with 12, Stu Graham 11, Clipperton 10, Mike McNeill 6 and Kurt Gowitt 4, while Kevin Burt, Doug Schweers, John Buis, Bruce Lowe, Rick LeBlanc, Dan Schweers and Rick Tough were scoreless. Nick Gallagher paced the Fighting Irish with 15. Rick Wilander added 9, Paul Spelliscy 8, Tim Mylett 4 and Cody Pantages 2, while Marc Lavertu, Mike McLaughlin, Dave Mills, Mark Simpson, Jim Redfern, Jim Patterson and Brian Haughian were scoreless.
