In the final, before a crowd of about 6,600, the Victoria Oak Bay Bays captured their second crown in four years with a 58-46 victory over the Vancouver David Thompson Trojans despite playing a flat game. Oak Bay coach Gary Taylor had planned to contain Vancouver’s Jim Chapman by playing a 1-3-1 half court zone and blocking him out the boards, while pressing ballhandlers Chapman and Byron McNair. Oak Bay’s quick guard Bert Mullin was outstanding on the perimeter, repeatedly setting up double teams with forwards Don Burrows and Dave Wallace and forcing numerous turnovers. Meanwhile, Tommy Holmes and Dave Morgan controlled the backboards. With the score tied at 14, Oak Bay went on 20-0 run as Victoria took control. All five starters scored in the run, with Mullin hitting layups and Morgan scoring three field goals. Although both Wallace and Morgan fouled out, Oak Bay was in control. Burrows kept shooting well from the outside, while Holmes crashed the offense glass. Oak Bay shot 19-45 from the field and 20-32 from the line, while David Thompson hit 20-66 from the floor and 6-22 from the line. The Bays led 34-18 at the half and 43-40 after three quarters. Tourney MVP Dave Morgan sat out most of the second half after fouling out three minutes into the second frame. Morgan later noted that Oak Bay run to break the game open was the product of Taylor’s coaching. “We’re disciplined. If we don’t do it right, we sit on the bench.” Burrows finished with 23, Mullin 15, Holmes 9, Morgan 6, Wallace 3 and Pete Mason 2. The Trojans were led by Jim Chapman 12, Byron McNair 11 and Les Hauser 16. The squad featured Dave Morgan and Don Burrows, the brother of Bob Burrows, who’d led Oak Bay to the 1966 final and captured the 1966 MVP award. “One heck of a season,” Taylor told the Victoria Times-Colonist.
