The Kodiaks opened the final frame with a bucket but the Flames answered with a 13-0 run. “We’ve been grinding out games all year,” Flames coach Kyle Smiens told Varsity Letters. “We’ve been trying to play gritty basketball this whole tournament. … We try to push them out of their comfort zone a little bit, as much as we can. We’re trying to force them to the left side and play hard defense.” Kodiaks coach Kayla Vanderhorst said “we basically graduated our whole starting lineup from last year. We’re starting a young team and I’m very proud of how far they’ve come.” Miah Schuurman paced the Flames with 31. With the score knotted at 56 in the final frame, the Pacers exploded for 12 unanswered to take command. Kealayna Tupas-Singh led the Pacers with 29. The Flames took command with a 9-0 run to open the second half. Tournament MVP and player of the game Miah Schuurman paced the Flames with 42, while nabbing 21 boards. “I think I worked hard,” Schuurman told Varsity Letters. “When it mattered, I think I did what I had to do. Knowing that it was my last game really let me put everything out there. We were all working towards that same goal and holding each other accountable, and we did it. … I knew I was going to be disappointed, in a way, because it was my last game with my friends. But coming into the tournament, I really just wanted to – we all wanted to – push through and get the win at the end. That’s been our whole goal. Our word for this weekend was ‘Grit’, and we were trying to live up to that and push through as much as we could.” Flames coach Kyle Smiens said “every game she (Schuurman) does something special and then the next game, she tops that.
