In the quarterfinals of the first tournament held for schools with an enrolment of fewer than 100 girls, held at Burns Lake Lakes District Secondary, the host Burns Lake Lakes District Lakers nipped the Oliver Southern Okanagan Hornets 52-51.
The Dawson Creek Bethel Christian (now Ron Pettigrew) Blazers dusted the Victoria St. Michaels University Jaguars 56-32. The Jaguars (coached by Milena Gaiga) included Tanis Laidlaw, Many Lewis, Jennifer Scherer, H Truran, L Warren, A Gordon, S Stewart, T Davies, I Porzecanski, S Elford, H Dunlap, J McLay and C Juvicic.
The Vancouver St. Patrick’s Celtics clipped the Sparwood Spartans 75-67.
In the last quarterfinal, the top-seeded Hope Mustangs bombed the Hazelton Spartans 99-20. The Spartans represented the zone in the provincials because zone winner Nisga’a did not have enough registered players to attend the tournament. The Spartans (coached by Mary Charlebois) included Carmen Muldre, Brandi Smith, Pansy Wright, Tammy Baskin, Lisa Mowatt, Angela Schandss. Charlebois told the Interior News that “our ‘short’ team struggled to check the 6-1 competition.”
In the semis, the top-seeded Hope Mustangs dispatched the Vancouver St. Patrick’s Celtics x-x.
In the other semi, the Dawson Creek Ron Pettigrew Christian Blazers defeated the Burns Lake Lakes District Lakers x-x.
In the bronze medal match, the Vancouver St. Patrick Celtics defeated the Burns Lake Lake District Lakers 63-53. The Lakers (coached by Peter Nalleweg) included Delores Wiebe, Brenda McCulloch, Stacey Petersen, Kami Svehla, Chona Nay, Marie Lambert, Arlene George, Katinka Goosen, Tracie Riggs, Sylvia Loewen, Janet Germaine, Jodi Philps and Frani Barth.
In the final, the top-seeded Hope Mustangs defeated the Dawson Creek Ron Pettigrew Christian Blazers (then known as Bethel Christian) 55-49 as Tracey Nazarchuk scored 30. Nazarchuk, named the tourney MVP, averaged 42 ppg in three games. The Mustangs led 23-20 at the half. Mustangs coach Lou Kraszlany told the Hope Standard that “everybody was able to contribute and felt they earned the championship as a team.”
