But the nerves didn’t last long.” Sam Bell paced the Saints with 22. Lions coach Doug Wong gained a measure of notoriety for having had the names and jersey numbers of two his players – Ranvir Rai and Daiya Dhaliwal – shaved onto the sides of his head. “Those are two boys on our team who have been injured all year, Grade 12s, and I love these guys,” Wong told Varsity Letters.ca. “My tribute was to put their names and number and a basketball on there, just to say hey, I’m thinking about you. It hurts not to play, but to me, they’re still a huge part of this. And the fan support is fantastic. We’re lucky – for Single A, you usually don’t get many people out. But with the elementary school kids, we must have had 100 people out. Tomorrow night we’re bringing another bus, so it should be good. I don’t know if the boys fully appreciate it yet as teenagers, but as they look back in years to come, they’re going to realize how lucky they were.” As for the game, Wong added, “I’m happy with the result, but I’m disappointed with the way we started. I just think we were stagnant – we didn’t move. Away from the ball we were very poor. We stood and watched, and we didn’t move our feet on defence. I try to stress to them that little things make the big things happen if you want to be successful. When I go into that change room, I’ll call a spade a spade, I’m an honest guy. The way we played today, we’re eliminated tomorrow.” Jaskirat Sandhu paced the Lions with 19. In the final, the 4th-seeded Kelowna Heritage Christian Saints clipped the 6th-seeded Smithers Bulkley Valley Christian Royals 65-53 after leading 21-12, 36-24 and 48-39 at the quarters. Saints coach Colton Tripke told Varsity Letters that “our inside game was good, but we really needed to get our outside game going today. We knew with their big guy (6-foot-5 Saymon Loki) down low, we had to make the long shots. … Our game plan was just double team him (Loki) every time he touched the ball in the post. He scored 44 last night (in a semifinal win over Similkameen), so we knew he was going to score. So the plan was just to limit him as much as possible.” The Royals rallied within 6 in the final quarter but Ben Robideau nailed a trey to quell the threat and Isaac Opuama blocked a Loki shot that led to Raymond Barrett being fouled and two free throws which iced the outcome. “Our guys played so well, and they have been working for this for the past two years,” Tripke said. “This is a blessing. This is the greatest thing ever. Our guys worked their butts off.” Royals coach Chris Steenhof said “they played Saymon different than anyone has this year. They are a very athletic team and they adjusted very quickly. Their athleticism hurt us because they made very quick decisions and we didn’t counter.” Tripke told the Langley Times that after losing in the semis in 2017, “we didn’t want to feel that same pain. We didn’t want to be in that same place so we had to work harder. … They have worked so hard all year for this. (And) for a small school that has four kids per grade, it just great to see.” Steenhof said “we ran out of gas. We played our five starters hard. … We overachieved this season in many ways. Before this game, I told them no matter what, this was a victory for us.” Sam Bell paced the Saints with 22. Defensive player of the tournament Raymond Barrett added 15, Ben Robideau 12, player of the game Isaac Opuama 12 and Joshua Weekes 4, while Jordan Nenasheff, player of the game Isaiah Akurienne, Mark Bell and Colton St. Pierre were scoreless.
