Sabres coach Jody Vosper said a combination of factors undid her troops. “No. 6 (Karen Li) came out and shot lights out. We had a couple of easy looks inside that we missed early, and they got a bit of a lead. Shenise (Sigsworth) got her fourth foul and had to sit – all of that kind of changed the momentum of the game.” Sa-Hali also missed point guard Miori Futemma, who twisted an ankle in the opening round. We were (missing) our fastest player, and that was apparent at the end of the game. It wasn’t that obvious in the first half, but at the end, for sure.” Brittania post Becky Fernandez said “we haven’t changed much (over last year, when it the silver), but our team dynamic is better. We know each other better and we just want it more because we were on the wrong side of it last year.” Bruins coach Mike Evans said “Sa-Hali played very well, they had a great game plan. They forced us into a lot of mistakes and a lot of turnovers. … Suddenly, they were ahead of us and there was a little anxiety.” Vosper said “at the end of the game, it was pretty obvious that we had nothing left. I’m extremely proud of how we played. We gave them a big scare; I just wish we would have had enough gas to last the whole game.” Jilliane Vina paced the Bruins with 18.         In the other semi, the Victoria Lambrick Park Lions nipped the Surrey Holy Cross Crusaders 76-72. The Pride rode its starting five for all but 23 seconds at the end of the first quarter, in which Tyger Holt rested. She returned in the second quarter along with Chelsea Strandlund, Emma Entzminger, Sarah Lefebvre and Mckenzie Smith. “I play five; I’m not deep and I’ve been lucky to have some pretty gifted athletes,” Pride coach Rocky Vitale said. “Adrenaline goes a long way with these kind of athletes.” Holy Cross fell behind by nine points in the first quarter and 11 in the second but took a 67-66 lead with 3:20 remaining. Strandlund hit a trey a minute later, but the Crusaders tied it at 69 with 1:06 on the clock. Strandlund again put the Price ahead with a lay-up, but Holy Cross’s Amy Sprangers made a long three-pointer for a 72-71 lead with 28 seconds left. Strandlund responded with another trey with 11.8 seconds remaining, and Entzminger iced it when she stole the Crusaders’ in-bound pass and scored four seconds later. “Score,” said Strandlund, when asked what was going through her mind during the final few possessions. “There was a lot of pressure, but we pulled through.” Crusaders coach Steve Beauchamp said “Lambrick Park had a couple of big girls, they were six-two or six-three, so we changed our defence. But I think it got the girls out of synch, so we said forget about it and went back to zone defence. Then we got the lead with about four minutes to go. They only play five players so they looked like they were tiring and we were taking over. But we had four possessions where we didn’t do anything.” Chelsea Strandlund paced the Lions with 30 on 10-26 from the floor, 5-20 from the arc, 5-6 from the line and 7 assists. We felt we had a shot.” The Crusaders were in command from the start, leading 16-9 after one quarter and extending the lead to 35-20 by halftime. “Holy Cross really controlled the game from the start, but there was no lack of effort from the Panthers as the girls left it all on the floor,” said Bobby Mitchell, co-coach of the Panthers alongside Lonny Mazaruk. “We are very happy for Holy Cross as they deserved the win and overcame a lot of adversity this season. Hats off to them. … This was a remarkable run for the team during the playoffs as we played six teams in the top-12 and went 4-2. The girls worked so hard and deserve the fourth-place finish. Give the kids credit, those five kids played a lot of minutes. We had a chance to win . . . but that’s a lot of minutes, and our legs . . . we just couldn’t finish.” Li said “we wanted it the whole year. Last year, we missed out on first place, so we made it our goal, and this is a big accomplishment for our team.” Becky Fernandez hit 14 during a decisive 21-2 run in the final quarter. “She came up big and made some key shots,” said Britannia coach Mike Evans said. “Ashley made some handling errors early . . . but at the end she made some key moves and off-loaded the ball at the right time. … Britannia’s 102 years old, and I don’t know when provincials started for girls. I know that we have a photo from 1919 of the girls’ basketball team wearing skirts . . . I tell the girls I coached that team too. I think this is our first (girls) provincial championship.” Li noted that “we represent the whole East Side (of Vancouver).
