Kalamalka star senior Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe had 15 of her 20 points in the first-quarter barrage, then was used sparingly. “I didn’t sense it before the game, but we had a great start from the beginning and never looked back,” said Lakers coach Reni Dolcetti. The Lakers dominated the first half. “We were down 13-0 at the start,” said Vernon coach Bobby Mitchell. “We came back and competed and got it down to 18 at one point in the second quarter. They came out flying. All their kids were hitting shots and doing what they were supposed to do.”

In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Vancouver York House Tigers dusted the 3rd-seeded Mission Roadrunners 69-53. Mission was in total command early, ripping off a 15-2 lead late in the first-quarter and then extending their lead to 43-23 early in the second half. But the Tigers exploded for a 20-0 run, including seven points in under a minute to pull into a 43-43 tie. York House’s depth ran the Roadrunners into a state of exhaustion. Mission’s hopes were further crippled early in the fourth quarter when top scorer Chelsea Reist fouled out and teammate Aieisha Luyken followed on the same stoppage with a technical. York promptly closed it out with a 25-10 run. The Roadrunners took a 16-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, but ran into foul problems. “There were a lot of fouls in all the game on both sides,” said Mission coach Anthony Luyken. “Usually the calls came at critical times. (Aieisha Luyken) picked up her fourth foul in in the third and the team saw their lead diminish. Eventually, the two teams were tied near the end of the third. Aieisha made her way onto the court in the final quarter, but was called on again when teammate Chelsea Reist was given a technical foul and challenged it. The call was upsetting. Chelsea and Aieisha fouling out in the same play totally changed the reflection of the game. We were without our best ball carrier.” Tessa Hart was also struggling with tendonitis of the knee. She was constantly icing it and taking pain killers. But Luyken’s foul trouble was the difference. “She’s not just about scoring; she also gets the ball to the right people at the right time.” Grade 11 star Roya Assadi tossed in 12 in the final quarter. Assadi finished with 15 on 7-13 from the floor, 1-2 from the line and 4 boards. Jesseca Eng hit 13 on 5-6 from the floor, 2-3 from the arc and 1-3 from the line.         In the bronze medal match, the Mission Roadrunners defeated the Vernon Panthers 51-41. Vernon led 12-10 after one quarter and 26-22 at the half. Mission led 39-24 after three quarters. “It was a pretty good tournament and we did fairly well,” said Mission coach Anthony Luyken. “Every game was a challenge in a different way. Last year was an emotional win for us because the year before, we were taken out early. This year, it was a little emotional realizing there’s potential, but we just wanted to do what we do. We gave it our best and everyone’s happy with it. You can’t control what happens in the game.” Aieisha Luyken paced Mission with 18 on 7-21 from the floor, 3-7 from the arc, 1-1 from the line, 6 boards and 4 assists.         In the final, the Vernon Kalamalka Lakers whipped the Vancouver York House Tigers 78-58. Kalamalka led 16-12 after one quarter. York House led 32-29 at the half. Kalamalka led 51-43 after three quarters. Senior guard Claire Nyrose scored a pair of lightning quick baskets to open the second-half and Lakers steamrolled from that point, led by the offence and shot-blocking defence of 6-1 tournament MVP Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe. The Lakers poise was also evident as they withstood the Tiger’s furious pressure. Their front-line of six footers – Raincock-Ekunwe, Olivia Vardabasso and Codi Schepp – stymied the Tigers offence. Trailing by three at the half and a few starters battling sickness, Lakers coach Reni Dolcetti urged his troops to tweak their half-court offence and cut down on turnovers. He also challenged them to be winners. “I told the girls, ‘If you want the banner hanging on your gym wall, you have 20 minutes. Let’s go get it.’ Nayo (tourney MVP Raincock-Ekunwe) was her usual dominant self with her inside game. Both Olivia (Vardabasso) and Codi (Schepp) provided key defensive rebounds and offensive put backs. Claire Nyrose, as a quiet leader, rose to the occasion with a six-point flurry in the third quarter posting an eventual game-high 20 points. This gave us the needed momentum. Hanna Pederson, fighting a flu bug, still managed to play awesome defense. Emily (Macphee) and Jessa (Joles) worked very effectively together to dismantle the York House press in the second half.” Simon Fraser-bound Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe said “we were all really happy. It was a good game. “We were down three at the half and then we just got our heads in the game and stopped turning the ball over. It was very satisfying. All that hard work paid off. This is very special. I’m very proud. I think it was our desire to win and our coaching, and Mr. Dolcetti really wanted to win so we kind of won it for him.” Dolcetti, a former national teamer and University of Victoria Vike, said “it is most coaches’ dream to win a provincial banner. While I have been fortunate to have brought other teams to the provincial tournament, it was difficult to reach the final game. This team had the potential to win. We never looked beyond the next game but realized the provincial title was obtainable. I feel extremely fortunate to have had such a special group of athletic, intelligent and coachable young women.” For Schepp, Vardabasso and Nyrose, it was a rare double-double since all three were also all-stars and starters with Kal’s gold-medal volleyball team. Point guard Claire Nyrose said “it was a combination of the group of girls and the coaching staff which made us successful. We were very team oriented. We wrote the words ‘Not Me’ on the bottom of our shoes before the tournament. It was so exciting for all of us.” Codi Schepp said “we were really happy. It was a lot different than volleyball because we were closer to home and had a lot of family and friends cheering us on. We really wanted to win it for our coach: he can finally retire with a win.” She added that the Lakers kept their poise when York House grabbed the half-time lead. “It just all came together. We didn’t let them get to us. It was just a matter of time before we took over the game.” Olivia Vardabasso said “it was just a great team to be on. We had really good chemistry. Everybody got along. It was an amazing feeling, so exciting.” Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe paced the Lakers with 20 on 9-14 from the floor, 2-9 from the line, 17 boards and 4 assists. Claire Nyrose added 20 on 6-15 from the floor, 8-10 from the line, 2 assists and 2 steals. Olivia Vardabasso tossed in 20 on 7-14 from the floor, 3-4 from the line and 11 boards.
