In the quarterfinals, the Prince George Duchess Park Condorettes defeated the Kamloops Westsyde Whundas 49-37. The Whundas scored just 2 points in the first quarter and never rallied within single digits. “I’ve always told them to believe in themselves,” coach Bob Bridges told Kamloops This Week. “They can do a lot that way if they dig down deep and find out what’s inside. … We thought we could upset these guys, but we were playing with a team very unsure of themselves. These girls have no idea how good they can be.” Christine LeBoudrais said “We weren’t playing like a team (in the first quarter). After that, we got basketball into our heads and played as a team.” The Whundas (coached by Bob Bridges, who retired after the season, assisted by Jerry Lee) also included Laura May, Amanda Howes, Melissa Andrews.
The Aldergrove Totems edged the Vancouver Little Flower Academy Angels 59-56 as Darci Arsene scored 15, Kristin Persson 15 and Michelle Oswald 12. The Angels included Aislinn Keegan.
The Vanderhoof Nechako Valley Viqueens spanked the Vancouver York House Tigers 56-35.
In the last quarterfinal, the North Vancouver Windsor Dukes clipped the Abbotsford Christian Knights 70-56. The Knights included Krystal Smiens, Rifka Heidelberg.
In the semis, the Vanderhoof Nechako Valley Viqueens defeated the Aldergrove Totems 63-50. Kristin Persson led the Totems with 14. Darci Arsene added 8.
In the other semi, the North Vancouver Windsor Dukes dispatched the Prince George Duchess Park Condorettes 53-48. Condorettes coach Al Ericsson told the Prince George Free Press that “we played well defenisvley but shot an abysmal 22 per cent from the field.”
In the bronze medal match, the Prince George Duchess Park Condorettes defeated the Aldergrove Totems 63-42. Darsi Arene paced the Totems with 17. The Totems (coached by Neil Brown) also included Michelle Oswald, Kristin Persson, Christina Jones, Krystal LeBreton, Amanda Harcoff (who tore her ACL midway through the season).
In the final, the Vanderhoof Nechako Valley Viqueens gave coach Doug Harshbarger a retirement present as they captured their second successive title by defeating the North Vancouver Windsor Dukes 68-64. “I was waiting to watch the kids react when the last second went off and it looked just like it was last year,” the 63-year-old Harshbarger told the Vancouver Sun. “It’s still the same feeling, year in and year out.” Windsor took a 36-30 lead at the half but the perimeter shots finally started falling for the Viqueens in the second half. Senior guard Deni Moore hit three of her five treys in the third quarter as the Viqueens outscored the Dukes 22-10, while tournament MVP and grade 10 post Mandy Hutchins took command of the paint. Hutchins finished with 19, including a pair of free throws with 7.9 seconds to play to ice the win. Viqueen Elana Arnold was chosen defensive player of the tournament. Christina Kiperchuk paced Windsor with 23.
