In the final, the Vanderhoof Nechako Valley Viqueens rebounded in their 1983 loss in the title game to capture their third provincial title and second in three years as Oregon University-bound Susan Ewanick closed her career with an all-tourney MVP performance. The Viqueens were facing North Central zone archrival Prince George D.P. Todd Trojanettes for the fifth time on the season and the Viqueens again prevailed, by a 63-59 count on the strength of Michelle Fitzpatrick’s ball handling savvy, Susan Clark’s rebounding and the scoring of Susan Ewanick. She finished with 31 points, including 21 in the second half. Roj Johal scored 18 for D.P. Todd before fouling out with 5:12 to play. The victory was Vanderhoof’s 47th of the season, against only one loss, to AA Abbotsford. Point guard Fitzpatrick noted that the Viqueens were motivated by their 1983 title loss. “Losing in the championship game last year gave us more incentive. We didn’t want to go through it again. We were overconfident last year. But it was a great experience – experience that resulted in us winning this time.” Viqueens coach Doug Harshbarger told the Prince George Citizen that “it’s like I said to (Trojan coach John) Triplett, any other year his team would have won. Just taking personnel and attitude, his team this year would have won last year against Aldergrove, they would have beaten us two years ago, they would have won almost any other year, I firmly believe that. It’s just that this year, they had to beat us and we’re that much better as well. It’s a shame for his kids that was the way things worked out.” Triplett said the foul trouble forced his team into a zone “and that allowed Susan to get rolling. As soon as we put on the zone, she just went crazy shooting from the outside.” Harshbarger said the zone allowed Ewanick to set up on the opposite side of the court from principal Trojanette defender Dolores Buljevic, repeatedly switching sides of Buljevic switched over. “It was a bit of cat-and-mouse game for a while.” After Johal fouled out, “we didn’t have the punch,” said Triplett.
