In the semis, top-seeded Mill Bay Brentwood College (the only team in the province without a school nickname) smacked the 4th-seeded Chilliwack G.W. Graham Grizzlies 85-63 by dominating the boards. Brentwood collected 22 offensive boards on the same glass that the Grizzlies managed 22 defensive boards. Brentwood led 50-35 at the half and 64-55 after three quarters. Brendan Sullivan paced Brentwood with 26. Aaron Shulga added 17 and Jonathan MacDonald 12. Gabe Manned paced the Grizzlies with 26. Jon Steele added 12 and Curtis Kmyta 12.
In the other semi, the 3rd-seeded Victoria St. Michaels University Blue Jaguars nipped the 2nd-seeded Vancouver King George Dragons 59-55. The Jaguars led by 19 at the start of the second half and then rode out a late Dragons storm. “That was a gutsy one tonight,” Jaguars coach Ian Hyde-Lay told VarsityLetters.ca. “We started poorly, we closed the first quarter well, had a bit of a fortunate second quarter where we made some long shots, and then in the second and third I thought we defended well. They are a class team with tough players and you knew a comeback was on the way. We just started clock-watching and not playing.” Jamison Schulz-Francisco led the Jaguars with 17. Ryan Hindson added 15 and Jasper Bosley 11. “It’s been a bit of an up-and-down season, and maybe we’re coming back at the right time,” Hyde-Lay said. “We have to get rested. Last year, I thought not only were (eventual champ) Collingwood significantly better than us, but we just had a poor night’s preparation, in sleep and food. We had no gas in the game.” Dragons’ scoring ace Yoel Teclehaimanot led the Dragons with 19, along with 18 boards. Kyle Guerrero added 18, including 4 treys.
In the bronze medal match, the 2nd-seeded Vancouver King George Dragons stomped the 4th-seeded Chilliwack G.W. Graham Grizzlies 88-44. In the final, top-seeded Mill Bay Brentwood College dispatched the 3rd-seeded Victoria St. Michaels University Blue Jaguars 54-44, in a reprise of Vancouver Island championship bout, which Brentwood won 67-37. Brentwood took control on back-to-back triples by player of the game Brendan Sullivan in the final 5:30 of play. “I saw the shot-clock running down, I was trying to run a play, but I just ended hucking it up,” Sullivan told VarsityLetters.ca. “I just had faith and apparently it went in.” Brentwood coach Blake Gage said “we’ve talked about family all year and we stuck together. There was a lot of adversity out there but they stuck together, they never stopped believing and they turned it up when they had to.” Brentwood trailed 31-20 at the half but slowly rallied back and took command with a definitive 17-5 run in the fourth quarter as Sullivan scored eight consecutive points. “He is a big-game player,” said Gage. “He hasn’t always looked so good when we aren’t in big games, but I tell you what, in the big games, the kid steps up.” Sullivan led Brentwood with 19. Nathan Paloske 13, and tournament MVP Bruno Chan 7, along with 11 boards, for Brentwood, while Aaron Shulga was chosen defensive MVP of the tournament. Blue Jaguars coach Ian Hyde-Lay said “they were just better than us, that’s it in a nutshell. We played with great emotion in the first half, but fatigue was a big issue for us. We had a lot of guys play a lot of minutes last night (in a win over King George). We were tired and (Brentwood) really amped up their defence.”
