In the final, the top-seeded Mission Roadrunners dusted the Burnaby St. Thomas More Knights 70-56 after leading 21-13, 34-31 and 50-36 at the quarters. Mission became the first school to earn a provincial basketball and football title in the same season. “It was defence – pure and simple,” said Roadrunners coach Danny Jakobs. “Eighty per cent of our practices are defence.” The Roadrunners also controlled the tempo perfectly. The Roadrunners put this game away in the third quarter, when they outscored the Knights 16-5 to lead 48-36 heading into the fourth. “We’re not much of an offensive team,” said Roadrunners forward Rhys Parry. “We do what we can on offence, try to run things, but defence is our strength.” Guard Luc Comeau, the tournament’s top defensive player, hit two treys as the Roadrunners raced out to a 21-13 first-quarter lead. The Knights slowly clawed back, and took a two-point lead with 5:11 remaining in the third quarter. The lead lasted 34 seconds as green-clad Mission responded with an 18-1 run. “Mission green,” Jakobs said. “I think we had about the same amount (of fans) at last year’s final, and they were in the same boat as us – they needed to see us win.” Assistant coach Jim Pearce added that “we really didn’t know how good we were. [We] didn’t play any double-A schools this year [in tournament play].” The Roadrunners finished 32-5 on the season and were determined to win the title after losing in overtime in the 2011 final. “Our kids never got rattled,” said Pearce. “They were very patient, [they] played so many triple-A teams over the years and could handle a lot of adversity. Defence really was the factor, we played such great defence that allowed us to stay in all games. We had great athletes on our team. … I’m just so proud of the boys. They deserve to win because they put so much time in. It didn’t just happen,” said Pearce. Knights coach Aaron Mitchell said a 16-5 Mission run to start the second half proved the difference. “We got caught up in their slow style and they killed us on the boards. We feed off transition and our half court, and we couldn’t do that against their two-three zone.” The Knights best quarter was the second as Mikey Carney hit two treys to close the deficit to 26-24. Ben Hieltjes shaved the gap to a single point with a pair of successful free throws with three minutes left in the half. Jalen Jana kept the deficit at one point with a transition bucket with seven seconds left on the clock in the second quarter. “There is no way we aren’t happy. We had an amazing run,” Mitchell said. “I knew we had good kids and it would pay off this year. Our goal was to get this group to the provincials.” It was the Roadrunners first title since 1954. “It’s been 12 years of us building a strong program,” co-coach Jim Pearce said. “We got ‘er done. …We thought we were well matched and it was going to be a contest of who could battle each other mentally. … Our best quarter is always the third. We locked them down.” Rhys Parry paced the Roadrunners with 21 on 6-7 from the floor, 2-2 from the arc, 7-9 from the line, 13 boards, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Luc Comeau, who was chosen defensive player of the tournament, added 19 on 6-14 from the floor, 4-12 from the arc, 3-7 from the line and 7 steals.
