The Prince George College Heights Cougars dispatched the Qualicum Beach Kwalikum Kondors 87-76 as Andy Olson scored 24, Brent Sevigny 21 and Adam Paulsen 20. The Kondors included Leigh Dyck, Eli Hansen, Phil Nenzel, Damon Peterson, Rob Lee and Argentinian exchange student Fernando Apestague.
The Oliver Southern Okanagan Hornets defeated the Pitt Meadows Marauders 70-63 as Zac Plansky scored 16. Ramiah Acasio paced the Marauders with 21. Aaron Frampton added 19. The Marauders also included Bryson Tiedeman.
In the last quarterfinal, the Vancouver St. Patrick’s Celtics nipped the Surrey Holy Cross Crusaders 68-67 as Jhon Gonzales scored 29 and Mark Lutrell 18. Crusader coach Gianni Risi told the Surrey Leader that “we took the lead with 16 seconds left, then they called a timeout with six seconds left. With three seconds left in the timeout the referee gives their player the ball. We run out onto the floor, a little panicked and they score a layup.” Risi said the referees “admitted the ball was put into play but the call stood. … We had a slow start. We didn’t shoot well and we made two costly turnovers over the last minute.” The Crusaders hit 19-62 from the floor. The Crusaders (coached by Risi) included John Stocking.
In the semis, the top-seeded Victoria Lambrick Park Lions clubbed the Vancouver St. Patrick’s Celtics 80-64 as Aaron Dow scored 24 and Steve Ross 23. Jhon Gonzales led the Celtics with 18.
In the other semi, the Prince George College Heights Cougars stomped the Oliver Southern Okanagan Hornets 94-75 as Andy Olson scored 27, Adam Paulsen 23 and Neil Chicoine 18. Zac Plensky led the Hornets with 18.
In the bronze medal match, the Vancouver St. Patrick’s Celtics whipped the Oliver Southern Okanagan Hornets 93-67. The Hornets included Zac Plensky.
In the final, the top-seeded Victoria Lambrick Park Lions defeated the Prince George College Heights Cougars 78-53. The Lions were led by 5-8, 140-pound point guard Steve Swonnell who averaged 17 ppg, 10 apg and 2 rpg, while shooting .370 from the floor, on the season as they finished (46-5). Swonnell, who was chosen tournament MVP, scored 16. Brent Sevigny led the Cougars with 17. Sevigny told the Prince George Citizen that “they pressed us all game and we just didn’t handle it right. … They controlled us with their defence pretty much.” Cougars co-coach Dave Holmes told the Prince George Free Press “it was their peak and our valley. … They had more depth than us and it showed. We really struggled when we had to go to our bench. … Our semi-final was a better performance.” Steve Ross paced the Lions with 18. Aaron Dow added 11 and Sean Murphy 11. Brent Sevigny led the Cougars with 17.
