In the quarterfinals, the Campbell River Carihi Tyees thrashed the Armstrong Pleasant Valley Saints 95-47. The Saints (coached by Ross Shannon) included Mark Kroeker, Jeff Tegard, Gary Out, Chris Lonsdale, Ryan Lepp, Kier Istace, Jim Fowler, Jamie Pringle, Chris Anderson, Ryan Bridge, Adam Forrester and Gene Bonin.
The Vernon Clarence Fulton Maroons defeated the Aldergrove Totems 74-66 as Brad Embree scored 18, Dave Nenansheft 15 and Chad Evachesen 13. The Totems (coached by Glenn Whittington) included Romel Guze, Ray Stanley, Josh Cariss, Doug Campbell, Randy Nohr, Micah Brocka, Bill Else, Mark Messmer, Travis Yaryck. Whittington told the Langley Advance that “we didn’t play well. Not to take anything away from them but it was a nervous game. You lose one game and you don’t make it to the final.” Aldergrove was held scoreless for the first seven minutes. “Nobody wanted the ball to do the job,” Whittington said. “We couldn’t get going. We’d get a couple of baskets and then turn the ball over to them. We just ran out of time. You have to play four good quarters and we played one and a half.”
The Ladysmith 49ers clubbed the Langley D.W. Poppy Red Hawks 81-62. Jason Hollingsworth led the Red Hawks with 19. Red Hawks coach Dave Leino told the Langley Advance that “we whot their lights out from the outside but they are really experienced. They were just the better team.” The Red Hawks (coached by Leino) included Jason Hollingsworth, Brian Turner.
In the last quarterfinal, the North Vancouver Windsor Dukes dusted the Victoria Lambrick Park Lions 86-69. Dave Tomczyk paced the Lions with 23. Gordon Snell added 22.
In the semis, the Campbell River Carihi Tyees whipped the Vernon Clarence Fulton Marooons 102-71 (also reported as 104-71 and 101-71) as Eric Hinrichsen scored 35, Greg Bateson 21. Brad Embree paced the Maroons with 13. Jeff Reed added 13, Steve Gilroy 10 and Chad Evachesen 10. Maroons coach Bob Shannon told the Vernon Morning Star that “they’re a very good team. They’ve got lots of depth. They’re big and talented and well-disciplined and controlled. … We packed it inside, thinking we’d stop them inside, so they took the outside. We got beat by a better team.”
In the other semi, the Ladysmith 49ers clipped the North Vancouver Windsor Dukes 65-52 as Preston Chase scored 24, Tony Baker 17, Chris Laing 10 and Joel Good 10. The 49ers led 21-19 after one quarter. The Dukes led 34-31 at the half. The 49ers led 47-46 after three quarters. With the score knotted at 52, Ladysmith exploded with a 13-0 run. 49ers coach Randy Steele told the Nanaimo Daily News that “everyone played well. It was 50-50 in the last quarter and nobody looked like they wanted to win. The guys just dug down.” Brad Guilfoyle led the Dukes with 12.
In the bronze medal match, the Vernon Clarence Fulton Maroons nipped the North Vancouver Windsor Dukes 82-80 on a late bucket by Chad Evaschen. Danny Reinhardt paced the Maroons with 20, while nabbing 21 boards. Maroons coach Bob Shannon told the Vernon Morning Star: “what a finish. Chad went in and shot from 10 feet out. The shot was in the air – the buzzer sounded – and swish, it wsa in. … We had a great team effort … But then, our strength this year has been our depth. Different guys starred in every game.” The Dukes included Brent Molinski, Jamie Oei, Brad Guilfoyle.
In the final, the Campbell River Carihi Tyees whipped the Ladysmith 49ers 85-63 (also reported as 85-62) as Ray Wilson scored 26 and tournament MVP Eric Hinrichsen 24. The Tyees took a 40-1 record into the tournament and never faltered. Their only loss on the season was to Triple-A Steveston. They led 26-12, 54-31 and 80-51 at the quarters. Tony Baker led the 49ers with 24. Ladysmith coach Randy Steel told the Nanaimo Daily News that “they just kept coming and we kind of ran out of gas. They deserved it. They were number one all year and nobody really challenged them.”
