In the semis, the top-seeded Ardrossan Lady Bisons overcame serious foul trouble to defeat the Lloydminster Barons 69-50. High scoring forward Connie Kreuger had fouled out with 10 minutes to play and star Kristy Wiebe was on the bench with four fouls. But she returned to the floor to ignite a 10-0 run as the Lady Bisons pulled out the win. “What happened is that everything they said about Kristy Wiebe was true,” said Barons coach Rob Lumsdon told the Edmonton Journal. “She came out and proved it.” Wiebe finished with 27 points. “She’s such a joy to watch and joy to coach,” said Lady Bisons assistant coach Pat Greene. “I tell her this is what you have to do and she goes out and does it.” Teammate Alana Green said Wiebe’s contribution was more than just offence. “It’s not only her scoring. She’s just such a team player.” The Lady Bisons were 9-28 from the line and hit just .330 from the field. “If we would have lost, it would have been crushing,” said Greene. “All week, you dream basketball, nothing else. But it was the pressure. We want it so much.” Ardrossan led 33-26 at the half but the Barons close the margin to five when Krueger and Wiebe got in foul trouble. “Then we kept screwing up,” said Green. “Because your nerves take over and then you get even more panicky. So you have to settle down and start over again. When Connie fouled out, I still thought we could do it. I never thought we were dead in the water. I had faith in our team.” Head coach Ralph Tuominen said Wiebe “just went out and took it over. They couldn’t contain her.”

But the Lady Bisons did a better job in denying the entry passes to the post in the second half as Ardrossan rallied. “Just let her score points and we’ll shut down the rest of the team,” said Tuominen. “She can score 40 points.
