In the quarterfinals, the Taber W.R. Myers Saints dumped the Bonnyville Roadrunners 57-28 after leading 30-13 at the half. Virginia Meyer paced the Saints with 20 points and 14 boards. Audrey Bullock added 12 and Sharon Hamilton 10, along with 13 boards.
The Edmonton Louis St. Laurent Barons crushed Drayton Valley 48-34.
The Lacombe Rams dumped the Calgary John Diefenbaker Chiefs 47-36.
In the last quarterfinal, the Camrose Trojans whipped High Prairie 57-40.
In the semis, the Taber W.R. Myers Saints defeated the Edmonton Louis St. Laurent Barons 48-39 (also reported as 46-39) after leading 28-21 at the half. Sharon Hamilton paced the Saints with 22. Dawn Nelson added 10 and Audrey Bullock 8. Virginia Meyer nabbed 11 boards.
In the other semi, the Lacombe Rams dispatched the Camrose Trojanettes 47-40. Rams coach Ted Hellard told the Red Deer Advocate “that (semi) was the big game. Camrose was the pre-tournament favourite. We were really up for them.”
In the bronze medal match, the Edmonton Louis St. Laurent Barons edged the Camrose Trojanettes 57-53.
In the final, the Taber W.R. Myers Saints defeated the Lacombe Rams 42-39. Saints coach Cliff Walters had previous won three provincial titles at Lethbridge Winston Churchill. He won the first of three consecutive titles at W.R. Myers behind an 18-point, 20 board effort from Sharon Hamilton. Virginia Meyer added 12 and Dawn Nelson 9. Cindy Grieb led the Rams with 19. Brenda Gula added 10. The Saints led 11-7, 22-19 and 36-27 at the quarters. “They are a very large team, with four girls 5-10,” said Walters. “We had a tough time trying to control the hoards.” Walters added that grade 10 point guard Corinne Jensen did a fine job of breaking the Lacombe press while chipping in 4 points. Rams coach Ted Hellard told the Red Deer Advocate that “the final was kind of anti-climactic (after the semifinal win over tournament favourite Camrose). Even then, it was anybody’s game. We were within one point in the final period but out shooting let us down.” Taber hit 9-15 from the line, while Lacombe was 2-15.
