In the quarterfinals, held in Lacombe, the St. Albert Skyhawks defeated the Medicine Hat McCoy? Colettes 41-34 (also reported as 41-36) as Denise Young scored 14 and Joan Powers 12. Erika Butcher paced the Colettes with 10. Mary-Lou Vine added 8. The Colettes (coached by Jeannette MacMillan and John Seaman) also included Selene Anhelher, Rose Ann Mastel, Rosalie Cote, Carol Votta, Cathy West, Jocelyn Racette, Francis Ottenbreit, Susan Wells, Eva Butcher, and Sandy Hunt.

        The Camrose Trojans dusted the Lloydminster Baronettes 80-22 as Lynn Graftaas scored 16, Janet Solveson 15, Sherry Knutsvig 12 and Terry Burkard 12. Lorraine Leier led the Baronettes with 8. Joanne Jack added 6.

        The Ponoka Broncs (then the Hi-Aces) nipped the Beaverlodge Royals (then the Comets) 48-47 as Lorrie Jess scored 20, Dianne Butterfield 10, Cathy Vold 5 and Loree Farnham 5. Vold hit the winning free throw with 38 seconds to play. Ponoka led 44-36 but lost Dianne Butterfield and Barb Vold to fouls and had Lorrie Jess and Loree Farnham on the bench with five fouls (were six allowed at the time?). The Comets knotted the score at 44 but then they lost Jill Nichol and Lloyd Harding to fouls. Beth Hoar gave the Hi-Aces a 46-44 lead with 4.5 minutes to play. Comet Erin Gaudin evened the score and then fouled out. Hoar put Ponoka ahead with a free throw with 2:09 to play but Josy Klein-Gebbnick knotted the score with 90 seconds to play, setting the stage for Vold’s winning free throw. Jill Nichol led the Royals with 19. Erin Gaudin added 10 and Lloyd Harding 7. The Royals (coached by Mac Keufeldt) also included Margaret Vant-Erve, Cheryl Neighbor, Josy Klein-Gebbinck, Theresa Pringnite, Janice Reichert.

        In the last quarterfinal, the Lethbridge Sir Winston Churchill Griffins thrashed the Vulcan Royals 41-22 as Cid Anderosn scored 18 and Lanna Simpson 9. Jill Walker led the Royals with 6. The Royals also included Marla Middleton, Linda Smith, Una Todd.

        In the semis, the Camrose Trojans torched the St. Albert Skyhawks 50-24 as Lynn Graftaas scored 11, Susan Wilcox 10, Sherry Knutsvig 9 and Janet Solverson 7. Denise Young led the Skyhawks with 8. Donna Perrott added 7.

        In the other semi, the Lethbridge Sir Winston Churchill Griffins clocked the Ponoka Broncs 64-23 as Lana Simpson scored 31, Cid Anderson 13 and Darcie James 9. Loree Farnham led the Broncs with 7. Dianne Butterfield added 5.

               In the bronze medal match, the St. Albert Skyhawks dispatched the Ponoka Broncs 40-36 as Joan Powers scored 14, Donna Perrott 12 and Denise Young 6. Lorrie Jess led the Broncs with 13 points and 19 boards. Loree Farnham added 9 and Dianne Butterfield 6. The Skyhawks hit 15-49 from the floor and 10-29 from the line. The Broncs hit 16-64 from the floor and 5-18 from the line. Ponoka led 30-27 after three quarters but Joan Powers, who’d dislocated a finger in the second quarter and who’d returned from hospital, notched 7 of her 14 points down the stretch. Ponoka led 12-8 after one quarter and 17-15 at the half. The Broncs (coached by Miriam Farrington) also included Carol Vold, Shirley Scheeler.

In the final, the Camrose Trojans defeated the Lethbridge Sir Winston Churchill Cougars 38-31 as Susan Wilcox scored 12, Janet Solverson 7 and Cheryl Bichel 7. Cid Anderson led the cougars with 12. Lanna Simpson added 6. Trojans coach Bill Maertens-Poole told the Red Deer Advocate that “I think the difference between this year and last year was in our guards. We were also able to use 10 players and we certainly got strong rebounding” as Lynn Graftaas, Susan Wilcox and Janet Solverson dominated the boards. Camrose led 9-6, 21-14 and 27-24 at the quarters. The Cougars rallied to within 32-30 but Camrose’s Janet Solverson and Susan Wilcox hit buckets to ice the win. The Cougars finished (35-4) on the season.
