Having lost twice to the Trojans during the regular season, the Spartans were determined to redeem themselves, forward Andrew Malyk told Postmedia. “Our main focus was to be playing the best basketball we could in the tournament. We wanted to look each other in the eye and know we gave everything we had.” Spartans coach Chris Delano said “I was a bit worried because they had a big victory in the first round while we had a bye. They have an explosive small forward who plays on the provincial team, but our zone limited his one-on-one opportunities and we held him to nine points. … Everyone was focused and aware of the challenge. We had a good scouting report where we looked at all the specifics. In the first two games (against Camrose) there may have been some lapses. We knew what we needed to do this time and we executed.” Malyk was one of three Spartans assigned to cover Trojans star guard Griffin Lorenz, who had put up more than 30 points in each game of the tournament. The Spartans made him work for every inch though, blanketing him with coverage and holding him to under 20 points for the first time this season. Delano said “in 2015, I had lots of those guys for 10 years, and our average height was 6’3 and two of those graduates are playing college today. On this team, I’ve only had these players for a year or two. We’re good but we didn’t have a rock star. This team worked hard, did it together and played for each other.” Trojans coach Jody Watson told the Camrose Canadian that losing to the Spartans was “bittersweet” having beaten them twice during the season, “but St. Peter the Apostle just played better than us. They shot the ball really, really well and they just played us a little better than we played.” Watson added that the Spartans “keyed” their defence on Griffin Lorenz “and he just couldn’t get his normal looks and our normal offence kind of stalled a little bit and we just couldn’t get going as a team. As with anything it’s a team effort.”
