In the final,
the Calgary Chestermere Cowboys defeated the Okotoks Holy Trinity Knights 76-68
as Calvin Christensen scored 33 and Kyle Wilson 20. Eli McLean and Derek Waldner
each scored 16 to pace the Knights. It was the third consecutive year the Knights
were in the final. “They did a good job on us,” said Knights post Derek Waldner.
“They came well prepared.” Waldner, the Knights’ leading scorer, took two fouls
early in the early game and the Chestermere Lakers erupted. “They built up a
lead of 17 points and we put Derek back in with about four minutes left in the
first half and we were able to cut the lead to 36-28 by halftime,” said Knights
coach Sam Aiello. But eight points was as close to the Lakers as the Knights would
get. Chestermere built up a lead of 16 points in the second half and while the
Knights would chip away at the lead, the margin was never less than eight
points. Aeillo said HTA had problems when the Lakers went to the basket and Waldner
would leave his man to guard the Chestermere player penetrating with the ball.
He said the Knights continued to fail to cover the man that Waldner left. “It
wasn’t one guy who failed to cover (the open man),” Aiello said. “It was the whole
team.” Holy Trinity finished (26-9) on the season.
