We’re very limited as to what we can put on the floor. Camille J.         In the final, the Red Deer Camille J. Lerouge Voyageurs defeated the top-seeded Coaldale Kate Andrews Gaels 89-88. The Voyageurs beat the Gaels at their own game, getting out in transition. The Voyageurs led 47-46 at the half. The Gaels opened the second half missing their first eight shots. The Voyageurs led 66-60 midway through the second half but the Gaels rallied to a 79-77 lead on a bucket by guard Darren Gugyelka. Lerouge went ahead again 87-80 before Gaels ran off five straight points to make it 87-85 with a minute to play. The Cougars hit a free throw but the Voyageurs Andre Richard hit a 6-foot jumper to make it 89-86 with 16 seconds to play and the Gaels drilled a meaningless two at the buzzer. He had his foot on the three-point line or it would have forced overtime. Noting that the Voyageurs twice nearly blew 10-point leads, Jody Gross told the Red Deer Advocate “we kept letting them back in the game with mental lapses. But it all came down to who wanted it most.” Voyageurs coach John Johnston said “we’re used to have teams roll over on us. But we knew this team wouldn’t. … We told the kids to put the nails in, to stop letting Coaldale back into the game. At the same time, though, we could have folded two or three times under pressure. That we didn’t shows how much character there is on this team.” Coaldale coach Terry Hanna said “we were in a good position but we just couldn’t hit anything. We took over 100 shots today but were only 36%. That’s just not like us.” Hanna told Canadian Press that “we took over 100 shots in the game, but we didn’t shoot over 40%. And we were only 14 for 29 from the foul line and that doesn’t include the bonuses we missed. Lerouge) don’t play many league games, but they go to a lot of tournaments here in Calgary and around the province. That makes them a little tougher. They didn’t doubt themselves at all. We came in here ranked number one, but we still considered ourselves underdogs.” Jody Gross led the Voyageurs with 19. Craig Ericksen added 16 and Andre Richard 15. Gugyelka and David Erickson led the Gaels with 24 points apiece. Dean McLaren and Shane Strate each added 12.
