In the quarterfinals, the top-seeded Vegreville St. Mary’s Saints clipped the 8th-seeded Milk River Erle Rivers Comets 94-68 as B.J. Duffy scored 32. Jamie Earl led the Comets with 20. Justin Pittman added 10.
The 5th-seeded Stirling Lakers dumped the 4th-seeded Calgary Heritage Christian Hawks 87-81 as Chris Clawson scored 40 and Mike Greene 18. Jason Berstad led the Hawks with 30. The Hawks also included Joseph Ness.
The 2nd-seeded Foremost Falcons dispatched the 7th-seeded Red Deer Word of Life Warriors 75-70 as Jon Nibler scored 24 and Cole Dixson 23. Greg Carritt and Kent Shebeck each scored 23 to lead the Warriors. Reid Nelson added 15. The Warriors also included Dusty Sorderberg, Ryan Cook.
In the last quarterfinal, the 11th-seeded Whitecourt St. Joseph’s Saints stunned the 3rd-seeded Acme Redmen 60-58 as Wannes Luppens scored 14. Dave Parent led the Redmen with 19. The Redmen also included Curtis Kostrosky, Robert Hunter.
In the semis, the 2nd-seeded Foremost Falcons clipped the 11th-seeded Whitecourt St. Joseph’s Saints 67-57 as Darcy Yancie scored 13, Chad Stryker 13 and Jon Nibler 12.
In the other semi, the top-seeded Vegreville St. Mary’s Saints dumped the 5th-seeded Stirling Lakers 97-81 as Paul Varga scored 28. Mark Edwards led the Lakers with 26. Billy-Ken Eaves added 20.
In the bronze medal match, the 5th-seeded Stirling Lakers whipped the 11th-seeded Whitecourt St. Joseph’s Saints 103-75 as Chris Clawson scored 52 and Billy-Ken Eaves 21.
In the final, the top-seeded Vegreville St. Mary’s Saints defeated the 2nd-seeded Foremost Falcons 70-65 as Paul Varga scored 24 and John Varga 20. Jon Nibler paced the Falcons with 20. Chad Stryker added 17, including five treys, and Cole Dixson 12. “I feel we played the best we can,” forward Chad Stryker told the Medicine Hat News. “Unfortunately, they played better.” Falcons coach Ray Rumpel said “tonight, I’ll feel bad. But in the future, I’ll feel very good about this game. I was in a provincial final in 1981 with Foremost and lost by five points, just like these guys did. I look back at that now as one of the proudest moments of my life. But I know 1 felt then just like these guys do tonight.” The Falcons hit just 7-26 from the line. “You can’t miss 19 foul shots and win a provincial title,” said Rumpel.
