In the quarterfinals, held in Hay Lakes, the Coalhurst Trojans whipped the host Hay Lakes Tigers 87-52 (also reported as 70-52). Randy Berle paced the Trojans with 23. Dean Trotter added 17. The Tigers (coach Ron Baier, manager Brian Mclachlin, manager Mary Pelz) included Barry Skabar, Buddy Winder, Rick Warman, Rod Scabar, Steve Buban, Scott Berkholtz, Ian Selin, Darryl Vandenberg, Michael These and Ross Anderson.
The Westlock St. Mary’s Sharks edged the Vermilion St. Jerome’s Spartans 71-69.
The Fairview St. Thomas More Kodiaks clubbed the Rosalind Raiders 68-47. The Raiders (coach Ron Wilson, manager Erin Wilson) included Stan Yuha, Mark Bowie, Darryl Langille, Dan Kusk, Scott Anderson, Brian MacDonald, Paull Kinnie, Darren King and Dwayne Burkhard.
In the last quarterfinal, the Trochu Valley Blue Jays nipped the Calgary Christian Cougars 49-48 in overtime.
In the semis, the Coalhurst Trojans torched the Westlock St. Mary’s Sharks 63-26.
In the other semi, the Fairview St. Thomas More Kodiaks stomped the Trochu Valley Blue Jays 93-58.
In the bronze medal match, the Westlock St. Mary’s Sharks clubbed the Trochu Valley Blue Jays 102-67.
In the final, the Coalhurst Trojans defeated the Fairview St. Thomas More Kodiaks 78-74. “St. Thomas had a 6 foot-6 and a 6-4 guy, and we got both of them in (foul) trouble. And when they got in trouble, they had to let us shoot,” Trojans coach DeWayne Duce told the Lethbridge Herald. The Trojans shot 69% from the floor and 58% from the line. Randy Berla paced the Trojans with 34. Dean Trotter added 23 and Brad Erickson 16. Guy Rook led the Kodiaks with 35. “St. Thomas More tried to put a half-court press on us, but when we broke it, we had three on-twos,” said Duce.
