In the quarterfinals, held in Coalhurst, the New Norway Spartans defeated the Acme Redmen 55-28. Acme broke to a 7-0 lead but the Spartans shifted to a full-court press and build a 19-16 lead at the half before extending the margin to 35-22 after three quarters. Joe Tschirren paced the Spartans with 18. Glen Christiansen added 12.
The Fairview St. Thomas More Kodiaks stomped the Rosemary Rockets 60-39. The Kodiaks capitalized on numerous turnovers and held the Rockets to two points in the second quarter while building a 23-12 lead at the half. Ken Luck paced the Kodiaks with 23. Kevin Doll added 19. Scott Plett led the Rockets with 11. Allan Norton added 10. The Rockets also included Tim Doerksen.
The Nobleford Noble Central Blades (who earned a berth in the provincials after the Central West zone representative was unable to attend) crushed Grassland 84-24. Rob Groenenboom paced the Blades with 14. John Waiand added 14, Darin Wohick 14 and Craig Deimuth 11. Grassland, with only seven players, managed only one point in the opening quarter, six in the second, five in the third and 12 in the fourth. Lewis Scinanshkewich paced Grassland with 12.
In the last quarterfinal, the Coalhurst Trojans spanked the Myrnam Barons 77-40. The Trojans led 16-8, 37-16 and 59-27 at the quarters. Scott Stanley paced the Trojans with 23. Rob Barclay added 12, Allan Van Duuren 12 and Joey Groenenboom 10. Lyall Semeniuk led the Barons with 18. Stanley said the Trojans played “pretty well.”
In the semis, the Coalhurst Trojans defeated the Nobleford Noble Central Blades 57-46. The Trojans led 10-6, 21-18 and 35-34 at the quarters. Joey Groenenboom paced the Trojans with 23. Peter Delauw added 12 and Bob Barclay 11. The Trojans hit 40% from the field, while the Blades hit 28%. Rob Groenenboom paced the Blades with 18. John Waiand added 13.
In the other semi, the New Norway Spartans edged the Fairview St. Thomas More Kodiaks 36-34.
In the bronze medal match, the Nobleford Noble Central Blades defeated the Fairview St. Thomas More Kodiaks 45-38 despite trailing 25-18 at the half. Rob Groenenboom paced the Blades with 18. Alan Luck added 18.
In the final, the Coalhurst Trojans defeated the New Norway Spartans 62-40. The Trojans appeared tense early as they felt behind 8-5 after one quarter and 19-17 at the half. They appeared relaxed in the second half while building a 37-26 lead after three quarters. “Tight, tight, tight,” Coalhurst coach Dwayne Duce told the Lethbridge Herald. “We played some super defence and started to fastbreak in the second half. We let our big guys go for the rebounds and throw the long bombs. Scott (Stanley) was shooting and rebounding well in the second half and New Norway couldn’t handle Scott or Joey (Groenenboom).” Groenenboom paced the Trojans with 20 on 7-9 from the floor. Norman Wirzba added 18, Stanley 15, Peter Delauw 6 and Allen Van Duuren 2. Joe Tschirren led the Spartans with 17. Coalhurst hit 34% from the field while New Norway hit 27%. Groenenboom said “we thought Nobleford was the big game, but New Norway turned out to be pretty tough and very physical. At half time coach Duce asked us if we wanted to win, and we said yes — and he told us to go out and play like we wanted it. I knew we had the shooting, but we just weren’t hitting in the first half.”
