The Skyhawks overcame an early 15-2 deficit but Brooke Froment and Kamryn DeKlerk nailed treys to give them a lead in the fourth quarter. “Everyone contributed, which was awesome,” Skyhawks coach John Dedrick told the St. Albert Gazette. Dedrick was elated with the bronze having lost Bella Cucic to season-ending injuries, and having had several players miss parts of the season due to injury. “Pretty happy how the season turned out given our Kenzie and Bella situations and then dealing with Abby [Morrison] out for so long. We were fortunate with the schedule being a little softer at the start to allow some of the (Grade) 10s to acclimatize themselves with each other and style of play. Tea DeMong paced the Skyhawks with 19. Kamryn DeKlerk added 13, Brooke Froment 12, Jordan Hessell 6, Mimi Sigue 4, Kyleigh Kornak 2 and Kaya Vandermeer 2, while Abby Morrison, Aine Murphy and Nicole Dea were scoreless. The Cardinals led 44-41 after three quarters but Carly Ahlstrom took command in the fourth quarter to lead the Coyotes to the title. “I couldn’t have asked for a better way to end my high school career,” Ahlstrom told CHATnewsTODAY. “I’m honestly speechless, it’s an incredible feeling. … I’m seriously speechless. We’ve only been together one year and I love them just like my second family. All of them are unreal, they’re amazing friends, they’re amazing teammates, and I’m just so proud and honoured to have the opportunity to play with them.” Coyotes coach Nadine Blum said “this is the first provincial basketball championship for our school, boys or girls. So, it’s a really big deal, it’s something that the players really wanted to achieve. So I was just overwhelmed, I’m so happy for them.” Carly Ahlstrom paced the Coyotes with 21.
