In the bronze medal match, the 6th-seeded Raymond Comets edged the 5th-seeded Cardston Cougars 73-72. Cougar Karen Low missed a jumper with 1.9 seconds to play. The Comets don’t do things the easy way, Comets coach Karie Baldry told the Lethbridge Herald. “But you know what, we do know how to win third because we’ve won a lot of thirds this year in some really tough tournaments. I just told them we know how to do this, but I’ll tell you in that last quarter we tried to give it to them. We made a lot of mistakes, but we’d come back with some hustle after our errors. I’m really proud of this group because they are extremely young and everyone counted us out. I know it’s not the gold medal match, but it feels like it with this group. We’ve overcome a lot of things and I’m so proud of them.” The Comets took a 21-9 lead on a jumper by Dakota Weir. They extended their lead to 30-15 on a steal and runout layup by Ali Cameron but Cardston rallied within 35-26 at the half. The Comets opened up a 41-29 lead early in the third quarter but Cougar Jennica Barfuss hit a trey and a bucket to trim the margin to 40-34. Cougar Taylor Stepan started the fourth quarter off with a trey to make it 57-49 before another basket from Low off a Julie Thompson shot made it 58-51. The Cougars pulled even with seven minutes to play on a Dani Sheen hoop but Cameron answered with a trey to make it 61-58. Baldry called Cameron “a tiny package with a ton of heart. She just gave everything she has. It’s her last game as a senior. 1 thought Natalie Tollestrup played very well and some of our young kids stepped up, they have to. They’re no longer young. I have eight kids coming back to the program. So it’s very fitting.” Baldry added that on the final shot, “they tried to go inside to their girl. So we tried to double back down on her, but it didn’t work out for them so they had to go with a deeper shot from her and that’s not her best shot. It’s just a lot of luck at 1.9 seconds. We’re scrambling, they’re scrambling and it’s really not anything we did spectacular or them. They didn’t get the shot and we won the game.” Cameron noted that “we were underrated and we just came up fighting every minute of every game. We fought hard.” Ali Cameron paced the Comets with 26. Natalie Tollestrup added 16, Dakota Weir 13, Jackie Tollestrup 6, Kimber Snow 4, Porsha West 4, Macey Mendenhall 3 and Ashley Karren 1, while Ellie Bisset, Attena Keeler, Kaitland Hill and Brooke Heggie were scoreless.
