Rachel Raymond led the Spartans with 21. Josie Peacock added 14. The Spartans led early but the Lancers rallied to a 37-31 lead at the half. “Other teams have to play their best five all the time,” Scarlett coach Bryce Tolley told the Lethbridge Herald. “We like to say their best five might be as good as ours, but our starters get a rest and we do well. When they come back we have a big advantage.” The crown was the Lancer’s 7th and fifth in nine years. The tandem of Tolley and assistant Lyle Watson retired after the triumph. “I thought that there were six teams in the province that had an honest shot at coming away with the title,” said O’Leary coach Ron Kutney. “I thought we were one of them. But we were young and had a lot of growing to do.” Spartans forward Bailey Brown noted that “no one thought we were going to get that far. So it was quite an accomplishment. Courtney Fowler added that “going in there, nobody expected us to do as well as we did. Making it to the final, we proved a lot of people wrong.” Kutney told the Edmonton Journal that the silver medal was “sweet” given the loss of starting point guard Kaylyn Shawaga in the Edmonton playoffs. “Considering we were seeded tenth, that made it all the more sweet. In the first half, we were within four, six points of them, but in the second half they started to wear us down and slowly pulled away. They had better depth. I’m really, really proud of them. We were up and down all season because of our youth.” Shawaga was “our top three-point shooter and she has a great calming effect. We missed her scoring but we also missed her leadership and calming influence.”
