We’re not ranked as high as I think we should be.” Tolley scored 9, all in the second half after getting into foul trouble in the first half. Brittany Cummings paced the Lancers with 22. Rachel Johnson added 15. Becky Heninger led the Kwahommies with 18. Cristal Freitag added 10. The Kwahommies shot just 11% from the field in the first half. “We had a horrible start,” coach Boris Grisonich told the Medicine Hat News. “Then in the second half, we came out with our press, we get two easy shots off of it and miss them both, and they go down and score. That happened twice in a row. That was the kind of night it was.” Even Heninger had an off night, Grisonich told the Lethbridge Herald. “She had 35 points in our last game. It wasn’t her night and it wasn’t our night. In the other semi, the 3rd-seeded Airdrie Bert Church Chargers defeated the 7th-seeded Calgary Dr. E.P. Scarlett Lancers 66-55.
In the bronze medal match, the 7th-seeded Calgary Dr. E.P. Scarlett defeated the top-seeded Calgary Springbank Phoenix 75-70. The Lancers credit their deep bench for the win. Ten of the 11 girls scored points and the full roster was called to the floor. “It’s amazing,” said 17-year-old Kassie Jordan, who had two points. “You can trust everybody. You know that someone’s going to score.” The Lancers held an approximate 10-point lead most of the game, but the Phoenix began to close the gap with about four minutes remaining, propelled by Marin McCue (26 points, including three from behind the arch) and Melissa Colborne (27 points, and also a trio of treys). McCue – who has earned a full scholarship to San Diego State next year – hit a three-pointer with one minute on the clock, and the Lancers led by only 72-70. McCue said her Phoenix team was still ailing from its loss on Friday. Springbank, which had been favoured to win the province, was stunned into submission by a 78-76 loss to Ainlay, the winning basket coming with less than a second left on the clock. “We were trying to be up for today but we’re still numb,” 6-0 guard McCue told the Calgary Herald. Lancers coach Bryce Tolley wasn’t listening to excuses. “They beat us by 35 points in a tournament after Christmas,” said Tolley. “We’ve improved a lot.”
In the final, the 5th-seeded Edmonton Harry Ainlay Titans defeated the 3rd-seeded Airdrie Bert Church Chargers 66-48. Star Andrea Plouffe was able to play 30 seconds despite a knee injury. “It felt so good,” said the Washington University-bound Plouffe. Whitney Adams led the Titans with 17. “We didn’t come to play,” said Holly Stevens, the Chargers’ leading scorer with 14 points. “We let them do whatever they wanted defensively. Offensively, we never found our rhythm.” Bert Church, a 3-A school playing up. The Chargers were left in tears. “It’s very emotional for them,” said Chargers coach Doug Wilde. “We’re a perimeter-oriented team, so we need to knock down shots early. We didn’t do that today.” Titans coach John Huot called it a victory for team chemistry. “This is the best team I have ever coached in 26 years of coaching basketball,” Huot said Tuesday. “The chemistry of this team is something I have never seen before.” Kassie Jordan, who scored 2, said depth also province a major factor. “It’s amazing. You can trust everybody. You know that somebody’s going to score.”
