The squad also featured 5-10 post Nicolle O’Connor, a member of the provincial juvenile team who said she was determined to put “the school’s first championship banner” up in the rafters. O’Leary was coached by Ron Kutney, a student at the school when it opened in 1961. “It’s a really great feeling, a great accomplishment,” he said. “It was one of our objectives, to be the first team in the school to do it. We’ve had some very prominent athletic programs over the years. … We’ve had a lot of finalists, a lot of third- and fourth- place finishes, but we were never able to win it. This is finally the big one. I guess this time it really applies when you say we were always the bridesmaids and never the brides and tonight, we’re the brides. It’s always a little more special when these two teams play each other because so many of the girls are friends, they’ve grown up together and played on club teams together. It’s always just a little more competitive.” The Spartans led 37-25 at the half. Titans coach John Huot noted that I really think their experience meant a lot, they’ve got five grade 12s and we have just two and they played like it. I think they just worked a little harder than we did in the first half and we never recovered.” Kutney said “we had our fab five there on the floor at the end. When they came in, they were one of the best freshman classes we’ve ever had and they wanted it really badly and they all played like it tonight.”
