The Kwahommies rallied to within one with 37 seconds to play but a Jenn Roles bucket and Medicine Hat technical gave the Titans a 57-52 lead. The Kwahommies led 29-23 at the half. Ainlay had taken its first lead midway through the second half. Two late calls disturbed Kwahommies coach Boris Grisonich, the Medicine Hat Times reported. A jump ball was called with 37 seconds to play but in the course of the tie-up, a Harry Ainlay player elbowed guard Claudette Cheret in the back. “Claudette bumped her on the shoulder and sort of said ‘You don’t have to do that,’ and was called for a technical,” said Grisonich. “It was a brutal call.” Harry Ainlay drained the two free throws to open the gap to 57-52. Kwahommie post Jaylene Rattai answered with a bucket. “I had no time outs left and so they panicked a little, thinking they had to make a three-point shot,” said Grisonich. With four seconds left, a foul was called against the Kwahommies and the teams marched to the line, though the Titans weren’t in the bonus. “My girls were all lined up at the other end for the shots,” said Grisonich. “I told them to get back on defence and told the ref to wait for them. He said no and let Harry Ainlay inbound the ball. The Magrath coach said that was a rotten way to decide the game and started writing a letter about the officiating right on the spot.” The Kwahommies held a 29-23 at the half. “I said we couldn’t let them past half court so we full-court man-to-manned them,” said Grisonich. “They had a lot of 10-second violations and when they did get the ball over they had only 15 seconds or so to get a shot away. The girls were just exhausted. But it was a beautiful game to watch and we represented our school, our city and our zone well. This is like a dream year. We won four of the five tournaments, won gold at zones and silver at provincials.”
