In the quarterfinals, held in Calgary, the Lethbridge Catholic Central Cittens dumped the Edmonton Harry Ainlay Titans 58-47 as Barb Babott scored 16, Lisa Demers 12 and Martina Szilagyi 10. Patty Smith led the Titans with 13. The Titans also included Sheryl Ferry, Joanna Ross, Chris White.
The Calgary Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs dumped the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Clipper Queens 70-45 as Cathy Johnson scored 22. Patti Meldrum led the Clipper Queens with 15.. The Clipper Queens also included Kris Layton, Carol Busse, Sheri Barva, Tobi Stevens, Karia Frayn, Karen Downs, Kimber Smeland, Peggy Au, Sherlyann Farren, Laura Daggy, Cheryl Payne and Theresa Pecht
The Sherwood Park Salisbury Sabres torched the Red Deer Lindsay Thurber Raiders 91-48 as Cathy Burge scored 24. Raiders coach Ellen van Doesburg told the Red Deer Advocate that “we were down 20 points before we got our footing and when you give up costly baskets to a team like that, you can’t get back into the game. … They were bigger than us and we have a lot of height. Playing them was a real eye-opener for our girls.” Christi Luders led the Raiders with 16. The Raiders (coached by Doesburg) also included Arlene Bourassa, Carmen Goodacre, Lesley Hayden, Mona Palfreyman, Lori Sorenson, Fiona Moffat, Susan McKay and Lisa Love.
In the last quarterfinal, the host Calgary Dr. E.P. Scarlett Lancers dispatched the St. Albert Paul Kane Blues 94-52 as Jodi Evans scored 18 and Susan Jickling 17. Lancers coach Tom Sorenson told the Calgary Herald his backcourt tandem of Evans and Jickling “move that well – they’re pretty hard to stop.” Bonnie McLean led Blues (coached by Mark Dobko) with 19.
In the semis, the Calgary E.P. Scarlett Lancers dispatched the Lethbridge Catholic Central Cittens 65-50. Lisa Demers paced the Cittens with 15. “They jumped on us by 10 points right from the beginning,” said coach Cal O’Brien. “Then Laura Bethlehem and Barb Babott fouled out with 10 minutes left. There was one very biased official, but I’m still not too sure we could have won.”
In the other semi, the Calgary Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs clipped the Sherwood Park Salisbury Sabres 67-61. Sabres coach Jim Lazaruk told the Edmonton Journal that “any time you play in a very close contest and don’t win, it’s a letdown. But we knew it’d be a tough go when we headed in there.”
In the bronze medal match, the Lethbridge Catholic Central Cittens defeated the Sherwood Park Salisbury Sabres 66-54 as Barb Babott scored 19 and Lisa Demers 18. Leslie Lacroix led the Sabres with 14. The Sabres also included Cathy Burge.
In the final, the Calgary Dr. E.P. Scarlett Lancers defeated the Calgary Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs 74-69 as Susan Jickling scored 34 and Jodi Evans 21. The Lancers led 41-33 at the half. Jickling told the Calgary Herald that the Lancers were eager for a rematch of the Calgary city final, which they lost 67-62. “We proved that we can do it.” Cathy Johnson led the Bulldogs with 23. Kelly Campbell added 18.
