In the bronze medal match, the Calgary St. Mary’s Saints dispatched the Grande Prairie St. Joseph’s Ceinahs 69-61 in overtime. The Ceinahs squandered a five-point lead with two minutes to play. Ceinahs coach Patrick McDonald told the Grande Prairie Herald Tribune that the loss was his fault. As coach of the Grande Prairie Regional Wolves of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association, “I definitely hurt the Ceinahs this year. They couldn’t draw from me the strength they needed. For that, I take the blame. They didn’t get the tender loving care the 1982 (Alberta champion) team did.” The Ceinahs (coached by McDonald, assisted by John Witschen) included Christine Beaulieu, Hope Keats, Patricia Dixon, Corinne Madden, Louise Good, Karen Hesse, Lorlie Wolitski and Susan Chatain.
In the final, the Lethbridge Catholic Central Cittens defeated the Taber W.R. Myers Saints 66-65 in overtime. Reserve Jackie Riske paced the Cittens with 20, on 9-14 from the floor, 2-2 from the line, and all six Lethbridge points in overtime. She “just went wild,” Cittens coach Cal O’Brien told the Lethbridge Herald. “I thought our bench was the determining factor. We played nine players and nine players scored.” O’Brien said reserve guard Suzanne Rodzinyak came up with two key rebounds in overtime to help produce the win. O’Brien told the Grande Prairie Herald Tribune that “it was due. I was starting to question my ability as a coach. We’d been ablt to get there but hadn’t been able to win it,” having made three previous finals. Barb Babott added 17 and Barb Kortt 11 for the Cittens, who led 34-24 at the half. O’Brien said “we knew in order to beat them, we would have to play defence. We’re the best defensive team in Alberta, including boys – they don’t play defence. … They had composure. We have a very young team but their patience was a key factor.. Kathleen Brewin paced the Saints with 24. Shannon Chipman added 21 and Christie Bailey 11. Saints co-coach Marvin Anderson said the Cittens “broke the press really well. That’s why I took it off. It just wasn’t getting us anything. It was just tiring us out.” With 25 seconds to play in overtime, Taber’s Kathy Brewin hit 1-2 from the line to trim the lead to 66-65. But Taber’s Shannon Chipman missed two free throws with 20 seconds to play and then a layup with six seconds to play and the Cittens held on for the win. Anderson said “we weren’t shooting well. We didn’t play well. Catholic Central played well. They were the better team tonight. They were a tough team. They deserved it.” Anderson added that his troops were weary after the semis. “We gave too much in that game and didn’t keep enough for the game against Lethbridge. The game against St. Joseph’s was probably our best game of the year.” O’Brien said Riske’s six points in overtime were fortuitous. “We weren’t executing the high post. So we switched off. It just so happened that she was the one that was open.”
